The city's war on certain non-profits (churches and, now, this house for families of patients to stay at near Ellis) is absolutely foolish.   These non-profits ENHANCE the quality of life in the community and provide some sense of dignity and stability to the community.

Hey, DV, how about the city's war on homeowners?   The war on financially struggling homeowners being forced to pay the tax bills of the downtown millionaires and politically connected IN ADDITION to paying their own taxes.

And how about the city's war on homeowners who are struggling financially after paying for the new downtown buildings and renovations of existing downtown buildings, and then the city goes after these homeowner charging them with code violations, for STUPID crap like the size of house numbers!!!!    And the city going after them to get even more money out of them by financially penallizing them because of code violations which they may have, but the only reason the owner occupant homeowners have code violations is because they have not had the money to make repairs to their own homes because the city steals from them by making them pay for lavish buildings downtown.

The neighborhoods would be enhanced and have a sense of stability if the city would stop the wild spending on non-essentials like cars for high paid employees to take daily pleasure drives far outside the city, and if they would stop giving downtown all the tax exemptions.

You see, DV, if the taxes on the homeowners was lower they could afford to stay in their homes and provide stability in the community.    If the homeowners could spend their own hard earned money on fixing up their own homes and making desired improvements to them, and making things pretty, then that would enhance the neighborhoods and bring stability, and make the neighborhoods in the city more desirable and it would increase property values which then means people have more equity in their homes which allows them to take out home equity loans to do more personally desired things to their homes which then causes the home to increase in value, which causes more equity, and more owner occupants would seek to live in the city which would bring more stability to the neighborhoods, etc. etc.

Of course, you can't respond to that.

GE Plot shouldn’t have opposed ‘Jack’s Place’

I want to say kudos to Roseann Mortorana [June 9 Gazette] for speaking out about GE Plot residents opposing “Jack’s Place.”
What a wonderful idea it was. Too bad those people are not more compassionate.

If it were the only place available then I would agree but its not.  There are 2 places for sales right now that are closer than the one in the GE Plot.  We need more compassion for historic places

RIP IOOF!

Jack's Place finds home
Facility to house families whose children are being treated at nearby hospitals

SCHENECTADY — A residence for parents and relatives of young patients at Sunnyview Rehabilitation and Ellis hospitals is about to become a reality.

Organizers for Jack's Place, whose original chosen location was rejected by city officials and members of the GE Realty Plot Association last year, are about to receive the final documents to purchase a large home that is steps away from Sunnyview off Rosa Road. It will be similar to the Ronald McDonald House, which provides lodging to families whose children are receiving treatment at nearby hospitals. Ronald McDonald Charities runs two houses on South Lake Avenue in Albany..................>>>>...............>>>>..................Read more: http://www.timesunion.com/local/article/Jack-s-Place-finds-home-4247730.php#ixzz2K7f4dss2

Mr. Brockbank is definitely NOT a member of the friends and family club...because if he was, not only would this home had been up and running by now, but the Plex would have granted him millions in grants, the City workers would have been trimming trees and filling potholes near this house and the Mayor would have been giving out keys to the City.

If this had been an idea with "Galesi". my senario would hold very true!!!

Considering the purpose of the facility and that it is not suppossedly a for profit facility, why would it be so bad to be off the tax roles? Wouldn't that allow them to better function for the chosen purpose?

No one disputes the fact that some non-profits are good causes.

His concern is the shrinking tax base killing the remaining homeowners. The lucky person
who's home was chosen, gets to unload soon to be worthless Schenectady property, probably
near fair market value. Something the rest of the homeowners dream of.

The growing numbers of tax exempt properties in Schenectady  is an epidemic, and a huge
financial burden.

Not challenging your question...just added my feelings and rhetorical question!
I've seen the good these places do and think it's great that someone has taken initiative
for local facility.

To be clear, I am not knocking what they do.  Personally, I think that Ellis has enough money and space to build on a wing just for this purpose.  They just got a whole bunch of money from the ST Clairs deal.

Yah, but they would charge. My understanding is houses like Ron McD don't charge the parnets.

That's true, the Ronald McDonald Houses are a saving grace for parents with ill children and for the children themselves (Albany Med has a huge play area just for the kids stuck in the hospital..has an air hockey table, lots of toys, etc).

This isn't one of the non-profits connected with the friends and family club and it's purpose is absolutely for the good of sick children and their parents. There's not going to be a Philip Morris associated with this getting a salary of $150K, there's not going to be a DEM job for every political has-been so they can collect a pension and a non-profit salary and it's not going to be funded by the McCheey/Gillen taxpayer funded grant.

Yes, the City is FILLED with non-profits, but at least this non-profit is actually on the up-and-up. Probably one of the first ones in the entire City.
