Re the June 3 editorial, “Carefully OK Jack’s Place,” about the potential refuge for families who need a safe place to [sleep] when one of their loved ones is just across [the street] at Ellis Hospital: The GE Realty Plot is no longer inhabited by the GE executives who once lived there. For those who wish to challenge the zoning as a single-family dwelling, I hope you never have to feel the pain of a catastrophic event with a child, when you need a safe haven. You people are two minutes away; some have to travel, and expenses can be overwhelming, Jack’s father serves proudly in the Schenectady Police Department. His is a good cause, so I hope all you of who live in the Plot can look beyond Schenectady politics and [do] the right thing. Save families in need. It doesn’t cost you a cent.
I was thinking about this last night - wouldn't it be nice if Union donated a house on their campus, or just off campus. It's secure - a nice gesture and service by Union - and it would solve everyone's issues. The $ collected to buy the property could be used for upgrades, repairs and transportation to the hospital as needed.
Wouldnt it be nice if Ellis Hospital built a small addition to their property just for this purpose. Wouldnt cost much and you cant get any closer than that. Just a little thought.

The city's war on certain non-profits (churches and, now, this house for families of patients to stay at near Ellis) is absolutely foolish. These non-profits ENHANCE the quality of life in the community and provide some sense of dignity and stability to the community.

Ellis Hospital is an acute care facility with very little use of a property of this type. Ellis does not provide long term care-or at least it is not its intended purpose. Those who are hospitalized for extremely long periods of time typically do not need hospital care but are there because they are awaiting nursing home placement (and they either do not have long term Medicaid to cover the costs, or have behavioral issues and are considered undesirable by nursing homes), or they are waiting for a dialysis slot to open. Ellis has a very small Pediatric ward that can not handle more than very minor issues and any children with serious health conditions are transferred to Albany Med.
This is something that may be more geared for Sunnyview, but Ellis and Sunnyview are not owned or operated by the same people. Ellis really shouldn't be expected to house Sunnyview families.

War on non-profits? Uh, excuse me but Proctors is probably the highest assessed property, it operates 100$ as a FOR PROFIT,

Unlike you and the other nayboobs who are trapped in a 4th grade mentality, I couldn't give a crap about "reputation score" --- I don't care what a bunch of ignorant whiners and assholes think about me. But I will continue to point out your lies and ignorant comments -- allowing the light of TRUTH to shine for all to see.

War on non-profits? Uh, excuse me but Proctors is probably the highest assessed property, it operates 100% as a FOR PROFIT--it does NOT operate with volunteers, it is NOT a charitable organization, it puts on the expensive lavish productions EXACTLY the same as the Broadway theaters in NYC, it "hires" people which it calls "volunteers" but rather than paying them for their service it makes them pay for providing the service to it, it has received tens of millions from the taxpayers, it's CEO STEALS money from the city taxpayers by ILLEGALLY having a STAR exemption, it's CEO get's paid a lavish salary, city bestows a forever 100% tax exemption on a property worth some $25 MILLION!!!!!!! The city is CLEARLY NOT having a war on non-profits.
But DV, the issue over this Jack's Place thing is that it will something OTHER THAN one family residential located in a one-family residential and historic designated neighborhoods. THAT brings DOWN property values. Of course, you know NOTHING whatsoever about property values and that's why you wanted to impose a mega store with huge 18 wheelers on a quiet little residential neighborhood. It's just like Union College removed tons of tax-paying houses from the tax rolls, RESIDENTIAL HOUSES within the GE plot, but I think they had the ability because the college was there before the GE plot
I know those who are trying to start this "house" want to be located close to the hospital, but is it proper to say that there is not one house outside of the GE Plot that would be appropriate? There's nothing on Grand Blvd? Nothing on Nott St? Nothing on Rosa Rd?
One thing that was mentioned in the committee meeting is this need for people to get to the hospital whatever the hour. Of course, that's the case, but someone in the committee meeting said the proximity is so that family members "can walk to the hospital---whether it's 3 in the afternoon or 3 in the morning." Would ANYONE want to walk ANYWHERE at 3 in the morning? I mean, come on, it's FAR SAFER to be two miles away, get in your car and drive into the parking garage. Is the garage open and well lit during the night? Are there security guards walking around at those hours? If the answers to these is "no," then they need to change.

Of course, leave it to DV to claim that removing more properties in the city from the tax rolls and incresing the taxes on people who pay almost the highest taxes in the country is good?
So, DV, you want the city to really be No. 1, right? You want the city to be not just almost the highest taxed city, but you want the homeonwers to pay ABSOLUTELY THE HIGHEST taxes in the whole country, the taxes of city homeowners MUST be No 1, right?
Let's see you explain how paying even higher taxes will attract people to buy homes and live in the city. Well???? Of course, you won't respond, you won't answer that question will you.
When your colleagues on the planning board ask you a question and ask you if you think it's best for homeowners to continue to pay increasing taxes, do you sit there in total silence refuse to respond?
.

War on nonprofits? lol More nonsense from the DEM implosion cheer leader. The horrible City DEMS created a $5 MILLION deficit in one year. Denise Brucker is the only DEM moron that wanted to tax St Al's out of existence. Not a peep out of you. Proctor's continues to yank taxpaying businesses off the City tax rolls. While Fat Morris refuses to repay anything nor pay a Stratton Fair Share PILOT. This property is paying over $20,000 a year in taxes. The City was right to keep it on the tax rolls and seek other solution at Ellis/Sunnyview to house parents in need. City property owners are sick and tired of picking up the tab for free loaders like Fat Morris.
the one's no one wants to buy....change the areas to hopitality neighborhoods and get some donations from big drug companies to clean up these areas....their drugs are on the streets too.....they could pay for private security since the police force is having a difficult time.....
