When I heard Fred Lee wants the Republican endorsement to run for mayor in the fall, I figured it's time to drag out the old saying, "Only in Schenectady'.' Lee is known mainly as head of the Schenectady Neighborhood Watch and Schenectady United Neighborhoods. His political aspirations are kind of off the rails because he's a Democrat committeeman asking for support from the GOP, the enemy camp in the major political party system. What makes the move even more odd is that his wife, Darlene Lee, is first-year city GOP chairwoman. Some longtime GOP key players privately said they want to endorse Roger Hull, head of the brand-new Alliance Party. Not Lee. If Hull can land both those party lines he has a shot at upsetting Democrat Gary McCarthy, the City Council president and acting mayor. If Lee enters the picture it becomes a three-way race independent punters say favors McCarthy. Michael Brockbank, a front-line GOP activist forever and open Hull supporter, seemed floored to learn of Lee's plan. "Anyone can ask for any political party support, but a lifelong Democrat asking for Republican endorsement seems strange to me,'' Brockbank said. "I'd hope the Republicans back Hull.'' A couple of Lee's friends and a GOP leader told me about his ambition. Lee did not return phone calls.
