The Albany, N.Y., area lost 6,400 jobs during the past year—the fourth worst decline in the United States. Albany was one of 106 metropolitan areas to lose jobs, dropping from 427,200 nonfarm jobs in January 2010 to 420,800. Glens Falls also saw a drop in 400 jobs during the same period, from 51,700 to 51,300. Sacramento was saddled with the biggest decline, losing 14,500 jobs in the past year, from January 2010 to January 2011. Atlanta and Las Vegas came next, with respective declines of 12,300 and 9,500. A total of 266 metropolitan areas gained employment between January 2010 and January 2011, according to new figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Ninety-three metros suffered declines, and 13 were unchanged.
