SCHENECTADY COUNTY
Free smoke detectors not fi refighters’ pick

BY KATHLEEN MOORE Gazette Reporter

A federal grant is sending free smoke detectors throughout the state, but the grant came with a rule that forced the state to ignore several of the newest detectors available.
The state Department of Health had to select a model with a “lifelong” battery, defined as 10 years. The department picked one that uses a tiny lithium battery embedded in the core of the machine, where it can’t be removed.
The idea is that residents won’t be able to pull out the battery to silence the alarm when they burn dinner.
But, local fi refighters said, residents could rip the detector off the wall and throw it away when they can’t immediately get it to stop beeping.
They wondered why the state didn’t choose a new model that comes with a “pause” button, which stops the alarm from beeping for 10 to 15 minutes. That’s usually long enough to air out a smoky kitchen.
That detector was ineligible for the grant because it uses a normal battery.
“The requirement was for a lifelong battery,” Department of Health spokesman Tom Allocco said. “We only had a couple of choices.”
The department could have chosen a hard-wired detector, which attaches to the house’s power system and can’t be easily removed from the wall. But those could only be installed if each county hired electricians to do the costly work, state offi cials said.
So it came down to one choice: a detector that doesn’t offer a pause button and must be replaced in its entirety in 10 years, when the battery dies, because it’s impossible to replace the battery.
The alarm will chirp when the battery dies.
Despite the questions about the choice, local officials said they’re enthusiastic about having free detectors to distribute. ..................>>>>................>>>>.................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01202&AppName=1
