U.S. Tomahawk Cruise Missiles Hit Targets in Libya

U.S. military officials have confirmed the first American tomahawk cruise missiles have been fired at targets inside Libya from ships in the Mediterranean Sea.

The move is the first direct U.S. involvement in the international operation mobilizing to stop Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's attacks on opposition strongholds and enforce a U.N.-backed no-fly zone.

Pentagon officials said there were 11 U.S. ships stationed in the Mediterranean Sea, including three submarines and two destroyers capable of firing cruise missiles, and several amphibious ships and supply ships.

The first strikes in what is being called "Operation Odyssey Dawn" were expected to target air defense missile sites around Tripoli, Misratah, and Surt, but no areas east of that or near Benghazi, officials said.

President Obama told members of Congress Friday that he had not yet authorized the use of U.S. planes, but a senior military official said Saturday that U.S. aircraft would be involved. It's unclear if those planes include bombers and fighters or other support aircraft.

Earlier Saturday French warplanes destroyed several Libyan military vehicles, including tanks, in eastern Libya today, French officials said.

They're not a direct threat to us but I'm sure this will only throw gas on an already blazing fire of hatred many have for us. I hate to sound like a blame America first type of person but we have been fckn around in the middle east for decades bombing, imposing sanctions, overthrowing governments, arming dictators and tyrants. We were bound to get hit back and that happened on 9/11, now what we have is a constant state of war and a government who uses fear to continue to expand in power while our rights crumble. The biggest threat we face now is from within not over in the desserts of some far off country.

It will be interesting to see if the 'next president' will go around the world apologizing! What are all of our presidents war mongers?

And what are we going to do.....go to china to pay for 'obama's war'? Cause we're broke.

Up to 140 tomahawk missiles fired so far, price for one missile $570,000. Already this is an expensive adventure that we can not afford.

Henry and Cicero thanks for posting videos.

Just sent the Ron Paul  one to relatives. My Dad a staunch Obama supporter, but I think even he would be against what is happening today, as he was against Bush going into Iraq.

Barack Obama, 11/25/02

"But I also think that us rushing into a war unilaterally was a mistake, and may still be a mistake..." (1:06)

"What I would have been concerned about was a... um... carte blanche to the administration uh for a doctrine of pre-emptive strikes that sets a good precedent." (2:33)

Gee, who is now rushing into a war (for oil) unilaterally with a pre-emptive strike?
