CAPITAL REGION Proposed law gets tough on teen tanning booth use BY KATHY BOWEN Gazette Reporter Reach Gazette Reporter Kathy Bowen at 885-6705 or kbowen@dailygazette.net.
New Yorkers between the ages of 14 and 17 may now use indoor tanning machines with parental consent, but a tougher law under consideration by the state Legislature would keep the young teens out of the indoor UV ray facilities until their 18th birthdays. The proposed ban is supported by the American Academy of Pediatrics and its New York Chapter 1, according to chapter Executive Director Nancy Adams. “There’s a lot of good data that tells of the damage tanning can do, especially in adolescent patients,” Adams said. Last year, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, which is part of the World Health Organization, classified tanning booths as carcinogenic to humans. But the owner of one of the oldest tanning salons in the region called the proposal “ridiculous.” Michael Renaud has owned the Sun Capsule Tanning Salon on Altamont Avenue in Schenectady since January 1988. “For several years the law has required parental consent for people under 18 and has banned anyone under 14 to tan,” he said. “If you look at good studies, you see the people most at risk of skin damage are the ones who take a two-week family vacation and overexpose their skin every day.” Many of Renaud’s customers tell him they were advised by doctors to spend time in a tanning booth to treat seasonal affective disorder, psoriasis or adult acne, he said. “The law bars anyone under 14 from using the tanning beds, but we would never let anyone under 14 use them anyway,” he said. ......................>>>>.................>>>>....................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01002&AppName=1
It's the state stepping in as the parents, again. I'll tell you what, my kids try to do it before they're 18, they'll have to deal with more than the state at home before they would have to deal with any of the penalties that the state would be handing out.
like the state legislature doesn't have more important issues to discuss and act on ----- like ethics reform, non-partisan reapportionment, eliminating unfunded state mandates, letting us drill for gas in the Southern Tier ..etc

So the state wants to ban tanning on kids under 16 BUT at that age they can get abortions, birth control and be given vaccinations without parental knowledge

Is it child abuse if they get a tan in their own yard?

1. smoking in car with someone under 16 2. having a glass of wine/beer at the dinner table with someone under 16 3. swearing in presence of someone under 16

child abuse is that set out by the government to 'train' plebian thought via public systems.....then slapping them upside the head when they step right/left right left right left or sit down to rest just to get out of the firing sites......
warning: child abuse is about the removal of SELF from a personhood all for the sake of the state.......
...you are a product of your environment, your environment is a product of your priorities, your priorities are a product of you......
The replacement of morality and conscience with law produces a deadly paradox.

If you complained about a parent smoking at the dinner table you would get beat with a belt, verbally abused and told they "brought you into this world, don't make me take you out."
Tanning industry fights back Taking cues from Big Tobacco, they battle evidence of possible harm By Bridget Huber, FairWarning Published 9:36 p.m., Saturday, September 1, 2012
A doctor in a white lab coat stands at the pearly gates. The voice of God booms, "And your good deeds?" The man responds, "Well, as a dermatologist, I've been warning people that sunlight will kill them and that it is as deadly as smoking."
His smug smile fades as God snaps, "You're saying that sunlight, which I created to keep you alive, give you vitamin D and make you feel good, is deadly? And the millions of dollars you received from chemical sunscreen companies had nothing do with your blasphemy?"
A bottle of SPF 1000 sunscreen materializes in the dermatologist's hand. "You'll need that where you're going," God says.
The scene is part of a training video for tanning salon employees made by the International Smart Tan Network, an industry group. The tone is tongue-in-cheek, but it's part of a defiant campaign to defend the $4.9 billion industry against mounting evidence of its questionable business practices and the harm caused by tanning. And, in an extraordinary touch, it is portraying doctors and other health authorities as the true villains – trying to counter a broad consensus among medical authorities that sunbed use increases the risk of skin cancer including melanoma, the most lethal form....................>>>>........................>>>>..........Read more: http://www.timesunion.com/local/article/Tanning-industry-fights-back-3834058.php#ixzz25JVia3bi
The Tanning industry sides with Big Tobacco. Imagine aligning yourself with a product that dispenses Class A carcinogens to the general public.
