Chez Sophie, the Jay Street French style bistro that has heralded as an early sign of "renaissance", has been put up for sale. The bistro is in close proximity to Proctor's and part of the Downtown Arts and Drunk District. Neither Death Ray nor County Legislature Chairwoman Susan Savage could be reached for comment.

A wonderful French Canadian who put her heart and soul into the business. Metrograft running the parking lot on Barrett didn't do her any favors. The free parking became paid during Lion King-driving away her customers. The contempt for small businesses Downtown continues. Everything is done to support the no tax biggies.

I never saw that! Wow. 'Wonderful' and 'French Canadian' in the same sentence! Holy smokes!

I heard they were going to move the business to Hamilton Hill, and rename it.

Chez What?

Graham needs to go to Montreal more often. Don't confuse the French with French Canadians.

These small businesses are just one casualty of the plex and the gazetto!!! How much 'free advertising' did Chez get as compared to Bombers, VanDyke, Villa Italia, Cornells, Marcellas, Apertivo(sp), Bow Tie, The Muddy Cup or even the 'Y'?

Not to mention that NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE GO DOWNTOWN? And why? It's still a crime ridden sh!thole with Proctors stuck right in the middle.

And let us not forget that you have to travel THROUGH the rest of the crumbling city FIRST to get to these 2 blocks. Roads are impassable. Drug dealers. Shootings. Prostitutes.

I have talked to 3 property owners in the city within this past week who are trying to sell their properties and can't. Their only option is to just 'walk away'. And they are prepared to do just that!

It's too bad about Chez....they worked hard to make it work!!

True. But it's not just the Gazetto free advertising which fewer are reading. Everything is slanted towards a chosen few. Chez Sophie did not get the PILOTS, the taxpayer handouts. The final straw was the free parking-which became paid parking when Lion King was in town.

Are you sure about this? Do you mean Chez Daisie?

If you do mean Chez Daisie, then you should know the owner was born and raised in Rotterdam

The French style bistro at 183 Jay Street/pedestrian mall is for sale. The bistro's name was not on the commercial listing. Chez Daisie's asking price is $85,000.

Ok, so what you're saying then is that the building is for sale not the business.

She doesn't own the building btw she rents the space.

I also know for a fact,  that she is swamped with business (her words) during the Lion King run. Also she's going to be expanding her business to include catering.

These are the true facts, please don't be so misleading in your posts

The business is for sale she doesn't even own the building. Buildings on Jay St are assessed much more than this. Maybe she will move to a larger place? Wish nothing but good luck. Your missing the bigger picture-it's tough for all small businesses with unequal competition-whatever the name.

oops!! You're right the business is for sale. My apologies.

She does well when Proctors has a large event, not so well other times. Said her lunch crowd has virtually disappeared.

ALL of the  businesses are saying the same thing. They are barely hanging on unless proctors has a huge show.

So without the taxpayer's money that supports proctors............the miracle 2 blocks would be dead!
THANK YOU SCHENECTADY COUNTY TAXPAYERS!!!!!
