SCHENECTADY COUNTY
Tech, management positions push countywide average earnings

BY MICHAEL LAMENDOLA Gazette Reporter
Reach Gazette reporter Michael Lamendola at 395-3114 or lamend@dailygazette.com.

Schenectady County recorded the state’s fifth highest average weekly wage in the second quarter of 2010, according to a new federal Bureau of Labor Statistic report.
Schenectady also was one of only four counties in New York with fewer than 75,000 workers to have an average weekly wage above the national average, according to the report.
Schenectady County’s average weekly wage was $959, calculated on 63,700 private workers. Manhattan had the highest average weekly wage, $1,655, calculated on 2.3 million workers. Yates County had the lowest average weekly wage of $530, based on 7,000 workers.
Martin Kohli, a technical analyst with the BLS, said Schenectady County’s higher-thanaverage weekly wage is based on several variables, including that it has concentrations of professional and technical companies and of “management of companies and enterprises” that are higher than the national average. These white-collar companies tend to pay higher-than-average wages.
Both concentrations may be attributable to the presence of GE Global Research in Niskayuna and GE’s Renewable Energy headquarters in Schenectady. Kohli said the quotient for professional and technical companies in Schenectady is 1.89 and for management companies it is 1.53. The national average quotient is 1 for these industries, he said.
“It means Schenectady has above average concentrations and high wages,” he said.
On the flip side, Schenectady County’s quotients for restaurants and accommodations were below the national average, at 0.79 and 0.18, respectively. Kohli said these quotients are not necessarily bad things, as these industries tend to pay low wages and offer employees little or no benefi ts. ..................>>>>>..................>>>>........................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r00704&AppName=1

This is NOT the residents, these are the JOBS that are located here (R&D, GE, Golub, Knolls etc) and furthermore for as long as I remember SC has had the GREATEST number of private sector jobs in the region DUE to these employers. This is not new and is a function of R&D, GE execs and engineering ops at Knolls. At one time, the figures were even more skewed in our favor but since GE has cut way back on its main plant ops here we have seen a marked decrease in private sector jobs and of course average earnings.

There are high paying jobs here. But the people that have them live out of County, especially in Saratoga County. No one wants to pay outrageous Schenectady County taxes-which are more than 3X higher than Saratoga County.

This is another feel good story from the Gazetto, which means nothing to the oppressed County resident. Look at disposable income-AFTER taxes. The GE R&D Lab has greatly expanded jobs but the people working there come from out of County. Retail follows housing not employment. Clifton Parks retail base keeps exploding. There are high paying jobs at the Main Plant but watch the traffic flow out of the City/County at 4pm.

When you school and understand economics, let me know, SmokingBalls. Is that "degree" you got form the police academy lacking in certain areas?

If anyone thinks that this county is filled with the wealthy and that the earners don't immediately head for the greener pastures of Southern Saratoga County, all they need to do is look at the other statistics as to what the residents earn via median household income. The small minds of petty people continue to conspire to keep this county in the past both politically and economically through a rigorous program of smoke and mirrors.

Talking about the Gazetto again?  They have been doing this for years for the DEMS. Write it enough with the correct amount of spin and hope someone will believe. Too bad all the puff pieces on Savage didn't help much. I guess at least 60% of the voters didn't believe her miracle.

Besides, you really should stop smoking bananas. It's not healthy.

Maybe this moron should stand at the Rexford bridge at rush hour and see which way the traffic is going? Take another look at GE Realty Plot resale prices. Was the foreclosure sale in the Gazetto or People's Daily? Make sure all your circulations are paid and up to date-some hard facts coming your way. Keep cheer leading for higher taxes and more Metrograft "solutions".

This is just smoke and mirrors!!! Bottom line is that the jobs that most of the 'good paying jobs' that are in schenectady were always here!!! The issue that the gazetto fails to report is how schenectady is one of the highest in the state for crime.....the highest in the state for taxes.......the highest vacancy rate in the state..........the most lucrative welfare benefits in the state, while NYS as a whole is the highest in the country. And we won't even begin to bring up the cost of the plex to the taxpayers.

And perhaps the gazetto should ask all of these people with these high paying jobs exactly where they live and pay taxes!

Funny, how the gazetto leaves those little tid bids out of their reporting!

Listen SB aka DV.  it says AVERAGE.   Do you have ANY ability in math??????

Would you care to explain, then WHY the TOTAL HOUSEHOLD income (all members of a family in total), in the city has generally just $30,000 per year?????    Now, PLEASE explain your math.  Can you explain HOW a total $30,000 household (roughly $15,000 per person) figures out to be that close to $1,000 per week per person?

Yes, before an imagination of your parents, GE was here with it's high paid executives.  Within the county we have Knolls, not sure if that was here before you were born, but it has high paying jobs.  Your buddy dems didn't cause those jobs to be high paid.

These so called "highest" well, remember Stratton's giveaways to his department heads.  And cops get paid so high in Schenectady, that it inflates the average number as well

Please do the math.  What is the average weekly and what is the median weekly of the following group of people based on these annual salaries each "employee"

Employee 1      $  500,000
Employee 2            30,000
Employee 3            30,000
Employee 4            30,000
Employee 5            30,000
Employee 6            30,000

Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and
speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.

There is also Schenectady International in the mix, as well as Golub corp and when you factor in the higher salaries of these long established outfits you will see how the wages paid in this county could blow the surrounding county wages out of the water...
