Try riding on a bike behind one these Harleys the exhaust fumes would choke the living dailyouts out of me.  I used to always try to ride behind any other manuf. made bike.

Now that the bikes are getting more sophisticated in regards to running them it isn't as easy as it once was to modify them.  Lots of pollution control stuff and electronics.  Used to be all you had to do was do a small change on the carb put the pipes on and away ya go.

Motorcycles emit less hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide compared to cars and trucks because they are generally twice as fuel-efficient, but they put out way more oxides of nitrogen compared to cars, which is the smog-forming pollution. That means in addition to the noise pollution of motorcyles with illegally-equipped exhausts, you are also subject to more ground-level smog which can be 10x higher than the smog caused by a car or light SUV. Motorcycles also have fewer restrictions on pollution and are less rigorously tested with regards to emissions. Motorcycle testing is at a slower speed compared to cars, so pollution is less apparent. Motorcycle manufacturers also only have to guarantee the emissions standards on their products up to 18,600 miles, while cars must comply up to 150,000 miles.

So next time a Harley rider/thug roars by your house, hold your breath and plug your ears and wish you had a third hand so you could give him the finger.

Thats BS... and you SHOULD know it.

The brand new HD I am paying for today has Cat converters in the exhaust and it is EPA 2015 compliant.
You just have a woody against motorcycles otherwise you would mention the 5 year old cars on the road that wouldn't pass emissions testing if their owners lives depended on it

If there are laws on the books............they should be enforced............plain and simple. And let the first person, riding a motorcycle that is out of regulation and against the law, tell the ticketing cop that they should be enforcing more serious crimes. Let's see how well that will work?

The bikes that seem to be causing the ire are bikes that are modified from stock.

You're accusing me of BS when you claim that the 5-year-old cars out there wouldn't pass emissions? That's BS, since car manufacturers have to guarantee emissions on their vehicles up to 150,000 miles. Motorcycle manufacturers (more specifically, engine manufacturers) only have to guarantee emissions compliance only up to 18,600 miles.

Not to mention that a cat on a HD lowers performance and many of these thugs with loud pipes have removed the cat because why not? They've already broken EPA laws by installing straight pipes, so might as well get rid of the cat too. Even with the cat HD's and other motorcycles still produce more smog-causing pollution than cars.

Why not just stop making excuses for loud biker bullies and respect your neighbors by riding quietly?

By the way, I commend your ability to buy a brand new Harley seeing as how you've lost your job 4 times. I don't see any teachers driving their Harleys to work, so you must be doing better than them.

Car makers have to warranty emissions equipment, but  does the car owner know it still complies?
I doubt it, based on the NYS inspections I've seen done.

Motorcycles may have less stringent emissions that cars, but their environmental impact is about the same.
You have to take into consideration they don't destroy road surfaces nearly at the same rate cars and trucks do...and when those roads need to be repaired, it involves HEAVY, polluting trucks and their asphalt..not to mention the municipal money involved.

As far as my HD, it all comes down to how you choose to spend your money.
Believe me, teachers do VERY well in this state, thank you. My brother and sister-in-law are teachers and live in a $400,000 house...I don't, mine at best is worth $150,000..but that's fine, I choose to spend my money differently.

It doesn't matter if the owner knows, the inspection will find any emissions problems. I don't know where you've seen inspections done, but from what I've seen they're very strict.

So now you admit that motorcycles have less stringent emissions than cars? And nice job changing the subject to road conditions.

Fortunately, the world doesn't run based on your anecdotes.

wpjmurray,

You're an azzclown.

If you don't think inspection stations look the other way in some cases, you live in the same fantasy land as teachers.

I never denied that cars have more stringent emissions requirements than bikes... either show me a quote saying  it, or drop it. Of course, you refuse to acknowledge the total environmental impact,..not to mention motorcycles at best spend 8 months on the road in this area compared to 12 months for cars.

And the anecdote? Sorry, its a fact. You're just too blind to see it.
Enjoy the warmer weather and loud pipes coming soon to a neighborhood near you!

And BTW, THANKS for the negative rating!! No one is perfect....

@55tbird

Name calling means I win. Just goes to show you're just a bitter, old thug who has no means of getting attention other than roaring around with his big pipes to make up for his little one.

Just because you do business at shady repair shops doesn't mean everybody does it. Care to provide me with the name of the shop that's not doing its job? I'd like to report them to the authorities.

Really........they are around!!

Kinda like getting your traffic ticket fixed by a 'friendly cop'!!

It is what it is!

LOL.. now that's funny.
I tell you what, why don't you pull into that bikers driveway that has the loud pipes and tell him what you think of him?....I doubt you have the guts, but if you do my bet is you wouldn't walk away with a full set of teeth.

I have stock pipes and have no intention of modding them. Why would I? I need to hear the stereo I paid for. BTW.. Loud pipes are usually smaller.
Shop? How about shops?...Based on your opinions on employment and unions, you seem like "The gub'ment should take of me from cradle to grave" type.. I'm helping you out by withholding that info.

Ha ha, a stereo on a Harley. Does anything make less sense?

I might be afraid of that Harley guy if I told him he was an anti-social jerk and should have more respect for his neighbors, but there's no way he could chase me down since, like most loud biker thugs, he was a white-haired lard-a**.

Yeah, you do in this thread!
80 watts of power, that's more than enough with a stock exhaust. It seems you know as much about Harleys as you do about Teachers Unions.

You better hope so...but like I said, I doubt you'd have the balls to confront him anyway.
