I assume those of you against a tax credit for "taking care of family member" forego any tax credits/deductions for your spouse and children. No? Why not?

gadfly don't respond to this we know you are single and childless

Spidey, anyone can claim their elderly parents as a deduction on their income tax if they fit the criteria.

What MV is proposing is a 'property tax' break for 'in-law' apts. Why?
Long after the in-laws are long gone, he can rent it out, like EVERYONE ELSE does!

Why would I forego a tax credit before a flat tax is implemented?  I'm in favor of NOT penalizing people for not having children.  But their needs to be a fair flat tax in place first.  No more of the special break for these people but not for these people.  Or the - we don't like this behavior so we will tax the $hit out of it in order to change their behavior.

There are so called 'in-law' apts EVERYWHERE that are being 'rented out' to 'out-laws'. Perhaps MV knows some of those folks who would like to be included in this proposed 'in-law' tax break along with him........perhaps?

How about just SPECIAL TAX DEDUCTION = BAD.  Why does government complicate the tax code?  Maybe you didnt' hear me - FLAT TAX!  No more tax breaks for some and not others.  Everybody plays by the same rules regardless of marital staus, child status, home ownership, etc...Got it?  GOOD.

Slogging through your taxes right now? Maybe you could hire someone from General Electric (GE) to help.

The company has beaten Uncle Sam. It paid no U.S. taxes for 2010, The New York Times reported. In fact, it received a tax benefit of $3.2 billion.

It's not that GE can claim poverty. The company rang up $14.2 billion in profits last year, including $5.1 billion from U.S. operations.

How did GE do it? Through what the Times describes as "innovative accounting" and fierce lobbying, GE has been cutting its tax bill for years. In a stroke of genius, it hired a former Treasury official to lead its tax department and filled its team with former IRS employees and Congressional tax specialists.

The top corporate tax rate is supposed to be 35% -- one of the highest in the world. But few companies actually pay that rate, since there are myriad loopholes and other ways to get breaks. Now, the Times reports, only 6.6% of Uncle Sam's tax revenue comes from corporations (down from 30% in the 1950s).

It's no coincidence that President Barack Obama installed GE's chief executive as the head of his new Council on Jobs and Competitiveness. One key subject the council is expected to address is taxes.

I built my new home with the intention of taking care of my father and/or in-laws if need be. I would never think of looking for a tax incentive for that. It's my responsiblility to take care of my family as best I can. I don't expect a kickback from others to do it.

That's what is wrong with the world. Everybody always wants a handout for doing something they should have tried to do anyway. Think about the multi-generational homes that existed for years. There was no place to kick out the elderly. Families took care of families. They did it and that was that. They didn't get $$ from other taxpayers via kickback to do it.

Brad Littlefield should have been the endorsed Rep candidate for Co. Leg. and not me. I have said that before on this forum. He was by far and is a much better candidate. He would have been a good Co. Legislator.

When we wrote the Landmark Historic Preservation ordinance, we did not add $$'s for taxbreaks. I wouldn't include them for Conservation purposes either. That shouldn't be the reason someone does something.

thanks Boomer, but I learned that you have to be underhanded and backstabbing to beat out your competition and that's just not who I am. I wanted to be in it to make government run better for the greater good not just for me. I'm much happier on the farm watching the deer graze in the fields.

It's too bad getting into politics has to be so dirty and underhanded. That's exactly why many people who would do a great job for the taxpayers if elected won't get involved and won't put themselves or their families thru all the mud slinging to run a campaign.

Thank you huskyhowls for your kind words.  As I have told you privately, it was a pleasure meeting you during our campaigns.
It would have been my honor to serve with you had we been elected.
