Buffardi launches bid for supervisor's office Ex-Schenectady County sheriff lists his economic vision for Rotterdam By Paul nelson Staff writer Published 12:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 22, 2011
ROTTERDAM -- Standing outside Rotterdam Town Hall, Harry Buffardi announced he is running for supervisor and then outlined his vision for this suburban town that he contends needs to refocus on pivotal issues like stabilizing taxes and economic development.
"There are problems here I think I can straighten out," said Buffardi who retired as Schenectady County Sheriff two years ago to be a college professor after a 36-year law enforcement career. "I'm looking to bring more stability and I believe I can be a better supervisor because I have a history of bringing people together."
The veteran lawman was joined during Monday afternoon's low-key affair by Mike Viscusi, Vince Roman and incumbent Councilman Wayne Calder who will run with Buffardi on the Democratic slate. The ticket is expected to win the support of party bosses on March 29.
Despite initial reservations, Buffardi said he decided to seek the post in part because of his dedication to public service and the bad rap the municipality is getting from the political sniping among some current governing body.
Since the supervisor job is part time, Buffardi intends to continue teaching at Schenectady County Community College.
As Buffardi was making his announcement, Francis Del Gallo, the man who currently serves as supervisor presided over a committee meeting upstairs at Town Hall.
During a break, Del Gallo said he was undeterred by Buffardi's candidacy and expressed confidence that the residents of Rotterdam would look at his achievements and return him back to office for a second term.
"Everybody thinks they can do a better job," he said. "I'm confident that when the time comes, I'll win.
Del Gallo, who seems to have fallen out of favor with the Democrats said it's because "I didn't do what they wanted me to do." The field also includes Brian McGarry of the No New Tax Party and Councilwoman Nicki DiLeva, a Conservative cross-endorsed by Democrats in her last election, has shown interest.
DiLeva, a former Republican county legislator, talked about seeking GOP support for the supervisor race, something Del Gallo said he hasn't ruled out.

While Frank Del Gallo argued with a board member in Town Hall on Monday, former Schenectady County Sheriff Harry Buffardi was at the building’s entrance offering himself as a more civil replacement for the incumbent town supervisor. With chairmen from both the town and county Democratic Committees looking on, Buffardi officially announced his run for Del Gallo’s position. He said his experience in government and leadership ability would be an asset to the supervisor’s position, because it now lacks both. Specifically, he said the Del Gallo administration hasn’t been able to achieve consensus among board members to help resolve critical issues facing Rotterdam. He faulted the supervisor and board members for fostering a combative atmosphere in Town Hall that has brought it to dysfunction. “They spend a lot of time arguing,” he said. Buffardi was flanked by fi rst-year incumbent Wayne Calder and Mike Viscusi, who are seeking re-election and election, respectively, to the Town Board. They were joined by Vincent Romano, a former Schenectady County Department of Public Works supervisor challenging longtime Highway Superintendent Jim Longo. Chairman Tony Jasenski said the Rotterdam Democratic Committee would wait until interviews are completed next week to make an endorsement. So far, he said, Del Gallo and Buffardi are the only two candidates to express an interest in the committee’s endorsement for supervisor. County Democratic Committee Chairman Brian Quail expressed confidence that the town Democrats would endorse Buffardi and the candidates running with him. He said the four candidates seem to best reflect the values of the local party. “This is the A-team,” he said after Buffardi’s announcement. “I’d say [the committee] will be behind these folks.” While Buffardi was wrapping up his announcement, Del Gallo and board member Nicola DiLeva were at an agenda meeting verbally sparring over raises suggested for a pair of Rotterdam Senior Center workers. The argument reached no appreciable resolution before the group decided to address other matters on the agenda. After the agenda meeting concluded, Del Gallo expressed his determination to win another term in office. He intends to run on a line with any party willing to give him an endorsement. “And if I have to make my own party, I’ll do that,” he quipped. Del Gallo ran as an independent endorsed by the Democrats in 2009, but registered as a Conservative after winning the election. In December, he switched his enrollment to Democrat, though that change won’t take effect until after November’s election. Del Gallo stood by his accomplishments during his first 15 months in office Monday, but seemed keenly aware of being a long shot to secure a nomination from the Democrats. He said “politicians in town” were behind the effort to oust him from the ticket. “It’s because I don’t do what they want me to do,” he said. Last week, Del Gallo attempted to generate support among committee members by asking them to vote for him by proxy. It appears that in some aspects, FDG was the only one trying to REVITALIZE ROTTERDAM!!! The dem-o-cons endorsed him to accomplish just that....right? Or did the dem-o-cons think that he would just be the gateway for their own political agenda? I choose to think the later.
This entire rotterdam embarrassing fiasco falls solely at the feet of the dem and con party, who blatantly misrepresented the candidates and platform they endorsed for their political and personal gain.
Perhaps rotterdamians are smarter for this and will NOT fall for the dems or cons political manipulation, misrepresentation and lies a second time......perhaps?

I don't disagree...I just think that we're still in the very early stages of that evolutionary process. What is disheartening is the fact that Independent lines get declining numbers of votes with successive elections...they always get their highest number of votes in their debut...the reverse would be a more encouraging sign of 'evolutionary' progress.
