Rte. 7 sewer hinges on $2.57M grant

    County, town and village offi cials are in the process of submitting a revised application to the federal government for a $2.57 million grant needed for a $7.8 million water and sewer expansion project.
    Sean Jordan, an economic development assistant for the county planning department, said the fi rst application for the grant funding was submitted to the federal Economic Development Administration in December and sent back last month. He said EDA offi cials wanted several issues clarifi ed in the application.
    “Since that time we’ve been trying to get all of their suggestions and comments in order and complete everything that wasn’t complete the first time around,” Jordan said. “The comments were basically pointing out some things that we didn’t include but should have included, or things we included that we need to explain better. This is the same application process; we have a new deadline of March 10.”
    Town Supervisor Tom Murray said the federal funding is the linchpin for the project to expand water and sewer out to the town and village’s economic development corridor on Route 7 and to provide the utilities needed for future phases of a planned expansion at Howe Caverns. He said he’s hoping if the federal funding is awarded, the town and village will be able to get a $1 million state small cities grant and $2 million over 20 years promised by Howe Caverns for the project.
