Oh but this IS political! First, this remark came from a political public servant with a history of arrogance. And that is a FACT! Second, the mental health organizations won't get involved because it IS political!! Shame on McCarthy! But also shame on the mental health organizations, which by the way, get much funding from taxes , for not standing up for their cause!!! Again.........the taxpayers must address this issue by themselves..............why?..................because it IS political!!! |

Bumble, thanks for making that a little clearer to me. I'm far from stupid but your straight shooting the way you did makes sense. But we also can't get lost in that completely. Stigma is the thiing that hurts so I guess we could say that by their failure to address this in any fashion makes them guilty as well. (McCarthy's cohorts AND advocacy groups) And Cel- Good Plan! |

No doubt it is political. For me to address this at both levels at the meeting the STIGMA portion is going to be overshadowed.
I have always been outraged at Mr. McCarthy's disrespect. It has always been condoned by the city council letting it go on for so long. They probably won't stand up here either.
I am holding out hope though. There is one person I am aware of who works in human services that they will stand up ...First and foremost to take a stand on STIGMA. Second...to fight to stop this callous disrespectful behavior repeated so many times by Mr. McCarthy.
More citizens are interested in the way the city council as a whole disrespects them Therefore the political side. They are quick to jump at that part of it but not mental health.
Many are ignorant, not educated about mental health. A classic example of STIGMA.
If I am not mistaken only Allen made a comment about it. It was a one sentence statement leaving the impression he thought it wrong.
It IS a political hot potato that is why so many are distancing themselves from the issue at the expense of allowing those with mental health issues to be 'trampled' on.
Being that Mr. McCarthy holds the position he does on the council and the appearance of disregard from the city council as a whole is condoning the bias and discrimination, putting credence to it.
If you observe an army fighting... in this battle their enemy is STIGMA, they always approach from more then one position. I am on the left flank. I don't mean this as a political stand right, left, conservative etc. In fact I am not registered with any party.
Think of it as air support, naval support, ground support each one taking a different position, commencing using their strong points. Three sides are weak, the advocacy organizations, Mental Health agencies and the council side they are a part of the battle too but the generals and admirals found they can't be counted on.
There is hope the other side is stronger. The community will go to battle PRIDE being their weapon. |

Nicely said Cel.
McCarthy's distain for the people he represents certainly proves that he's no longer fit to hold any political position. His contempt for others is apparent and he cannot even wrangle up enough self-control during a public meeting.
Schenectady has too many issues to handle, McCarthy's childlike behavior shouldn't be one of them.

Right-his problem is not limited to this one outburst. We cannot afford him on a part time basis even on the Council. He's is on Metrograft, he is on County IDA, he is on the DEM committee, he was President of SACC-TV when it was destroyed, he understands the importance of high taxes and voted to raise them more than Stratton. Somehow the City will get by with his "leadership". |

Focusing back on the issue of STIGMA.
We did our work, advocated. Hopefully those who were ignorant are now a tad more aware of how a statement made such as the ones Mr. McCarthy made can have horrible ramifications.
I am not so sure Mr. McCarthy got it though. He still mentioned that folks "misunderstood" him. Oh well.

"Misunderstood"-lol. Next he was "misquoted" and the statement was "taken out of context". Get a fork ready. He refuses to listen. He's done the same thing to Mary M for years. Anyone that does not goosestep with DEM bosses is laughed at. If not out loud-then insults texted. Denise Brucker had tried to remove public comment for years. Then she tried to remove the cameras. The other funny thing is that the Rev who was so concerned about civility was preacher again last night. Where was his outrage against Gary McCarthy's demeaning insults? He's only outraged at the residents-never the DEM "leaders". Maybe if the leaders weren't so outrageous neither would the righteous reaction? |

Hi Benny: I will be honest. There are times I will disagree with D. Brucker's stand on issues. Sometimes very aggressively and I have certainly been aggressive in regards to Ms Brucker trying to shut down televising the city council meetings going back to May 2004. But for a moment lets push that issue aside I don't know her position today, 7 years later. Maybe someone here can bring me up to date on that issue. Last night she came back to where I was standing, gave me a warm handshake and indicated I did a fine job of getting the issues across. She left me with the impression that she was referring to me trying to reduce STIGMA. I could be totally misreading her. Maybe she was thanking me for how I held Mr. McCarthy accountable for his statements or for requesting the rules for the city council meeting both for the council and for citizens be posted on the city website. I tend to be one who tries to believe there is goodness found in everyone. i am hoping that working with the disabled in her previous employment she was referring to the STIGMA issue and not how I held McCarthy accountable for his inappropriate comments while chairing the meetings. I am also hoping she heard the plea for information needed in regards to posting the rules concerning the meetings for both the council and for us citizens and maybe her thanks was for that. At this particular point in time I don't know. I could be super naive and ignorant in this issue but it hasn't be the first time for me. When I find out I was I just keep that the info of what I found in the back of my head for future reference. |

Happy to hear this but let's be honest-she's running for re-election again in November. Hopefully, she is also speaking privately because this is intolerable. We don't have to go back 7 years. In the past couple months she criticized St Al's for renting space to the City schools. She wanted property taxes from the church! DVR was going to look into this. Too much of the meeting is staged; "Discussed at the committee meeting, motion to put in the consent agenda-motion by Ms. King-second by Mr Erickson" then approved unanimously. We could have this prerecorded. We need multiple parties and new Council people to go with the new Mayor. |

Yeppers They could just add the voting right there at the committees meeting and get to the rest of the procedures at the council meeting. Anyone want to see how they voted can view the committees meeting on TV. |
