1,500 Teachers Paid to Do Union Business While Missing Class

  In New York City's funny math, you get only one teacher for the price of two.

The Department of Education pays about 1,500 teachers for time they spend on union activities -- and pays other teachers to replace them in the classroom.

It's a sweetheart deal that costs taxpayers an extra $9 million a year to pay fill-ins for instructors who are sprung -- at full pay -- to carry out responsibilities for the United Federation of Teachers.

With Mayor Bloomberg calling for thousands of teacher layoffs to balance the 2012 budget, critics say it's time to halt the extravagant benefit.

"In these tight fiscal times, it defies common sense to pay two different people to do one job," said Dick Dadey, executive director of Citizens Union, a government watchdog. "It's a waste of money."

That $9 million would cover the salaries of 198 new teachers at the current annual $45,530 starting pay.

The DOE lets 40 experienced teachers collect top pay and fringe benefits, but work just one class period a day.

Under a contract agreement since 2003, the DOE excuses these veterans to work for the UFT -- currently 38 as district representatives and two as union vice presidents. The UFT pays them another salary, plus expenses.

English teacher Tom Dromgoole, for instance, collects top teacher pay, $100,049 a year, from the DOE for his slot at Leadership and Public Service HS in downtown Manhattan. But he is relieved for most of the day to serve as a UFT high school rep. The UFT supplements his salary by $50,461, records show.

does that....but really?....really?......honest????......really???
apparantly they dont have foresight into what that causes along with the ability to hogtie a government into future planning/padding for them(not that
politicos aren't to blame for actually letting it happen-a$$holes) but that also puts them at a disadvantage when they complain about their taxes...

Time to do away with the unions.  They have done their job, and the fact is, government is stepping in to do their jobs. If there becomes a time where we need them again, I'm sure that people can figure out how to bring them together or speak up for themselves at that time.

of course....that's what folks dont realise....unions will always have a say....right now they are the bullies and need to evolve....
there ain't nuthin' new under the sun when it comes to human nature....but we live for such small increments that we fail to see the
changing systems.....the future is coming

Thou shall not enter the Kingdom of Heaven unless your bargaining group is represented by an officer of the Catholic Church.  The different denominations of religion are like the different union locals, fighting to represent you to negotiating with God(management) on your behalf.  Going into the confessional booth is like filing a grievance and speaking with the arbitrator all at the same time.

I have looked many a times and know in advance you will not be pleased with what you find when you look.

What is the difference in the presentation of the bankrupt scenario?  ANS: A bunch of spoiled and ruthless yuppies of which most are attorneys greasing the skids as they dot the "I's" and cross the "T's" walking with as much cash as they can today as they with a strong arm also lock in the productivity value of the next five to seven generations. Their presentation of prospective has worked easily and grandly for them over the last 70 years and there is nothing of any consequence stopping them as of today so the beat goes on!

Government "plays" great paupers to the media for presentation to the public while at the same time having the net worth of a million Bill Gates. The perspective you are spoon feed from your government is NOT in your interests but in theirs as the US / local government financial "empires" continues to expand Worldwide..
