My grant was a five year grant with increasing match.  We have a line in the budget now.  That doesn't mean it won't get cut sometime but in fact it's the way of the future in elder care so I suspect it won't.

But it could get cut. This is what happens when we allow the reckless tax and spend government to take over and control programs. It is GOV ALMIGHTY that picks and choses who and what gets funding. And we the sheople have to go begging for our own money.

Look, there are many folks like yourself who have a passionate cause and are looking to the government to fund it. There is no money!!!

Schenectady county has many many government programs and non profits to aid the seniors in need. And for that you should be thankful. It's not a perfect system, as non are, but I'd bet the farm that NYS has the best and most expensive elder care program in the country as they do for medicaid.

So can we agree that the rotterdam senior center, as it sits right now, is ineffective and should closed? And that it has become nothing more than a social gossip center for political leverage?

the 'longterm care insurance' of years past was WOMEN......now that women work (whether it's monetary/personal reason) the system is lagging....

men and women were 'yolked' together like the oxen to produce 'work'......so we are in a quandry....

if the argument is that 'women do it better'----then pay well
if the argument is that women shouldn't work----get your fighting gear on because backward isn't an option for the middle to upper class.....

and those who have the means will ALWAYS have the means....and there will ALWAYS exist those who 'have it easier' than us......life is hard, always
has been and always will be.....there IS NO LEVEL PLAYING FIELD....we have what we have because we have what we have----no matter what that is...
it may not look as nice and pretty as someone else's but it is ours individually......

segregation called by any other name and by any other means is still just that

So how are you preparing for your 'senior years'?

downsizing alot and hoping that folks wont panic as I age......what happens-happens

it's like saying how do you prepare to drive and hope not to get hit.....what folks expectations are of care is different to each and
every person....some folks think it includes 'brain exercises', some flat screen tv's, some a retirement home in Florida, some
a person attached at their hip to do everything for them, some doing until they cant.....but a senior center is not the answer to aging

seniors should be integrated like everyone else, not segregated.....aging is not a tsunami or an earthquake....but it is still that normal

Nobody said including me, that the senior center is the answer to aging.  It is, for the current elderly, another facet of their lives.  Senior centers are closing up everywhere.  Younger seniors want something more hip if it is to be recreation and a senior office with competent personnel can work from the TH.  AGain Rotterdam is not ready for the next age of folks.  This thread is not about the haves and the have nots.

media/tech center.....for all ages.....AFTER the town makes a REAL plan and we stick to it......no more willy-nilly planning.....
we need to get it together---NOW.....

The fact of the matter is that the rotterdam senior center is using seniors as pawns in a political battle. It always was and will continue until they shut it down. I'm sure that we can all agree that this senior center offers NOTHING!! Anything this center has to offer is available throughout the county.

And the 'hip' boomers are heading to glenville and that is if they have time. They are either still working, watching grandchildren, off to florida, bus trips to casinos....etc.

And the bottom line is that there is defunding because there is only so much money in the pot to go around. And obama care is in large, the reason for all of the defunding.

Don't agree w ith you on Obama.  But the senior center NOW seems to not be offering real help-just trips.  I do not believe the senior center was a political spot until ST made it that way. Andhe got supported by Mertz and the goofy Buchanan.  (Is he still the head of the party?)  Until then, everyone was being attended to.  If the only raison d'etre for the center is doing trips--CLOSE it.  JD wants the job to line up support so he can be TC.  The NNORC area of Albany has 2,000 seniors living in it (3 square mile area) Of the 2000--800 utilize some service offered.  Many get case assistance or case management.  Thousands of calls are fielded for information and referral.  There are numerous educational programs as well as socialization opportunities.  More than 35,000 newsletters, flyers, and other info gets sent out in a year.  The office is hopping ALL the time.  NNORC has just hired a PT nurse and handyman to help people with their home maitenance.  Schenectady County blew it.  They were too late to the table.  Too bad--you snooze you lose.  And St's administration was snoozing.

It all costs money Deb........money we ain't got right now. The cupboard is bare!!

HEAP and Office of the Aging in Schenectady County already has most of the services you mention. My in-laws neighbors are recipients of those services. eg handymen/nurse etc....

Like I said earlier....GOV ALMIGHTY is lowering their re-embursements to medicare/medicaid to nursing homes, hospitals and doctors. Federal and State's government are defunding many programs. And yet they expect the same care/attention to be given. CAN'T HAPPEN.

GOV ALMIGHTY has already chosen who will be at the top of the food chain and who will be at the bottom!

Close the rotterdam senior center and put that money to better use in rotterdam.

The senior center is just that....a center, a place to hang out with your buddies.....maybe back in the day for those particular seniors it was acceptable...
the boomers are not the same....we need a Rotterdam media/tech community center for all ages.....a segregated community is a weak community...
and it's much easier to become a podium puck(the poor kids/the poor seniors/the poor moms etc) when one aspect is shoved in a closet....
I see it every day at the nursing home.....family members come in and have the same 'shocked' look on their faces.....yes, at that stage, there is
medical intervention....but out in the world the elderly shouldn't be segregated......less shock value when we get older....it's hard enough because
aging is so insidious at least if we are rubbing elbows out in the world for as long as we can 'aged wisdom' will too.....dont worry....the services needed
will come....will they be perfect---ABSOLUTELY NOT...neither is life....it's just more respectable to desegregate and get close up......
