Everything the empire zone businesses purchase is exempt from sales tax. Did you know that if the new golub office complex has any work done.....there is NO tax applied. So if I worked for Xerox and was called to fix their machine.....NO SALES TAX. If I worked for an elevator company and was called to fix their elevators....NO SALES TAX. Anything 'inside' the building.....NO SALES TAX!

Check out Schenectady's Empire Zone district....it's huge!!!!

There is quite a lot of sales tax NOT being generated in Schenectady. And there is quite a lot of property NOT being generated by these businesses. Generating sales tax does NOT help the property owners. Paying property/school taxes does. That is a no brainer. Economics 101.

is this a change

it was only empire zone businesses purchase from another empire zone business

Since the revenues from sales tax eventually become part of the General Fund --- they DO help property owners because that means that offsets the amount needed to be raised by the property tax.     AND THAT IS A NO-BRAINER --- ECONOMICS 101    (I suggest that you need to learn economics 101 from a reliable source and not from a pamphlet  you find in a Cracker Jacks box or worse at a "tea party")

Sales taxes that are collected by businesses on products sold are sent to the state --- a portion is kept at the state and becomes part of the state general fund  --- a portion is sent back to the counties  -- which keeps part of it and distributes part of it to the municipalities within the county.  At the county and the municipal level thissales tax revenue becomes part of the county's and the municipal governments' general fund.

If you want to see proof of it -- request a copy of the county budget and/or any municipalities budget --- it clearly shows Sales Tax revenue as a Income   (money coming in -- for you folks in the tea party movement) ...   and  -- folks -- this income or revenue is used to pay for part of the county and municipal budgets.

You should be able to understand that -- if not -- there might be a picture book out there that explains it.

Sounds great, then let's pass legislation eliminating property tax on ALL retail commercial properties(not just the cronies) and only collect their sales taxes.  You sound pretty conservative DVOR.  I say lets go to a consumption tax.  Are you on board DVOR?

I have heard a lot of positive things about the consumption tax.   I haven't seen a specific proposal brought forth in the state or federal legislatures.    But I support the concept -- just want to see the specifics of the bill before I would give my full backing for it.

Well, if you think it is good enough for Muddy Cup, why not the rest of Schenectady businesses?  Make all Schenectady business tax exempt.

I don't have the authority to do that unilaterally.

Well, you rub elbows with the politicians, I'm sure you could float that idea and let them know how unfair it is to make some business tax exempt and other not.  It all starts with public support for the idea.

How much do you think the Muddy Cup could have saved if they were exempt from paying rents and taxes? Probably enough to hire four staff persons like Proctors new cafe does. How about the Ambition Cafe down on Jay? How fair is it that Proctors is property/school tax exempt, receives sales tax exemptions on most of its profits and now has a cafe competing with them?

A non-profit is supposed to be creating jobs and serving a greater good to the area, not unfairlycompeting with other for-profit businesses - or putting others out of business.

One day you folks say that I have no influence on our local leaders and the next that I have such great influence on our local leaders.

I am pretty sure that the consumption tax would take an act of the state legislature --- and for some reason Mr. Farley isn't talking to me ....  I guess I'll have to call Mr. Amedore.

Talk to Savage and Stratton, let them know what a good idea it is to drop all Schenectady County retail business off of the property tax roll and rely on the sales tax revenue.  You know,,,like the Muddy Cup.  You can use the Muddy Cup and Bomber Buritto as your examples of success, and if only ALL businesses in Schenectady were tax exempt we could duplicate that success throughout the city.  Whatta ya think?

Like the meager sales generated covers all City/County/School property taxes as was well as $120,000 in rent the Muddy Cup paid. This is all nonsense. The MSM keeps spinning the argument away from Proctor's complete failure to pay ANY PILOT. It's obvious that Death Ray Gillen and Mercury Morris are calling all the shots Downtown. Taxes up, unemployment up, real estate prices collapsing, nonprofit salaries at record highs.

Nonprofits are not supposed to be the sole job creators. On the other side of the City we have Ellis Hospital putting up another ugly 3 story parking garage on Rosa Rd. Instead of private sector construction/job creation everything is nonprofit construction/job creation-which ends up costing residents more money. Since there is absolutely no leadership in the City no one can reign in these non profit piggies.

Muddy Cup was so successful it couldn't cover its nut. So buffoon Mercury Morris "decides to take back his space". ROTFLMAO!! Only in Schenectady is the socialization of another private business cheered in the pathetic media. The lines were too long? When? At one musical a month. Burrito is more famous for police calls than its fare. What's the latest on the shotgun attack? Thought it was all captured on Mayor SOS' cameras. Instead of a cop on the beat that moron wants more cameras! They were probably hooked up to OSM and captured sky shots.
