Police: Woman lied about threat to mayor

    Bogus death threats against Mayor Brian U. Stratton were used by an area woman in an effort to have her ex-boyfriend arrested, authorities said.
    Sgt. Luciano Savoia said police were dispatched immediately to City Hall after the threats were reported and the mayor was never in any danger during the episode Tuesday morning. But the threats coupled with an unrelated disturbance at City Hall were enough to put police on high alert.
    The first threat was received by a bartender at the Saw Mill Tavern off South Street, after an anonymous woman called claiming that a man was plotting to kill the mayor. Meanwhile, the security staff at Schenectady County Community College contacted police after coming across a note claiming the same man was plotting to kill Stratton with a gun.
    Heather Meaney, a spokeswoman for the community college, said the threatening note was discovered by a student in a trash can on the campus. She said the two pages were immediately placed in a plastic bag and turned over to authorities.
    Police then received a call from a pay phone at the Eastern Parkway Price Chopper, with a woman identifying the same man as someone who was planning to shoot the mayor. Simultaneously, they received a call about a man causing a disturbance at City Hall, spurring concern the events might be connected.
    Investigators were able to locate the man who was alleged to have threatened the mayor and quickly determined that he had nothing to do with the threats that had been pouring in.
    After listening to a recording of the Price Chopper call, the man identified the woman as an ex-girlfriend. Savoia said the two were embroiled in a domestic dispute earlier.
