Correcting the misstatements or lies in the previous posts

1) The grant tor rebuild Erie Blvd can NOT be spent on snow plowing or anything other than rebuilding
     Erie Blvd.
2) I was driving in the city on Wednesday, January 19 .. 3 different times .. and the main roads were in
very good shape and the side roads were ok

3) Mayor Stratton was at City Hall at least part of the day.  I know because I saw him in the building and spoke
    with him.

wasn't the Blvd $$ taken from Mont Pleasant?

CAPITAL REGION
Cities struggle to get streets, sidewalks cleared
Failing to shovel outside your home can bring penalties

BY MICHAEL LAMENDOLA Gazette Reporter

Schenectady city snowplow crews are battling the clock to clean streets curb to curb before subzero temperatures set in later this week and turn slush into rocklike ice.
In the process, they are pushing street slurry onto sidewalks and driveway aprons, forcing homeowners to clean the mess repeatedly or else face fines or additional costs. Property owners are responsible for keeping sidewalks clear of snow and ice in Schenectady and in other municipalities in the Capital Region.
“This last storm created some ungodly problems; it is very heavy and very wet. It comes off the plows and makes a mess of people’s sidewalks and driveway aprons,” said Carl Olsen, commissioner of general services for Schenectady.
“I feel sorry for people. They have to constantly shovel it, and they do not have a lot of space to store it. A lot of times they do not have median strips between the curb and sidewalks. So when we plow, we push it right onto sidewalks,” Olsen said.
The city has to maintain suffi cient width on streets for public access and safety reasons, Olsen said.
“It is very important we push the snow curb to curb to avoid rutting it when the temperatures get very cold,” he said.
Crews have been working since 5 a.m. Tuesday to clear roads and lay down salt.
“We will continue until the weather gives us a break,” he said.
Olsen said salt does not work as well when temperatures fall to 10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit. Temperatures are expected to drop through the rest of the week, hitting 4 below zero Saturday.
CLEAN UP OR PAY UP
A city ordinance requires people to clear their sidewalks within 24 hours of snowfall. In this case, the clock started running Tuesday morning. Olsen said the city places a high priority on clearing sidewalks used by large numbers of children, such as those near schools.
Jeremy Howard, offi ce manager for the city’s Department of General Services, said three code enforcement offi cers have already written more than 25 tickets per day, targeting people who have not cleaned their sidewalks or have pushed snow onto public thoroughfares. Howard said offi cers are fi nding persistent violations in the Hamilton Hill area, primarily at properties with absentee landlords.
A violation comes with a $50 administrative fee. If the person fails to comply, the city will clear the sidewalk and then add the cost to the property owner’s taxes, Howard said. The charge can range from $15 to $200, based on the amount of time a city crew spends on the job. Howard said the city will give a break to people who are handicapped or elderly. ...........................>>>>........................>>>>..........................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01102&AppName=1

Do you talk about Mt Pleasant? Let him know 3 more businesses are fleeing. Part of the day-WOW! But still demands full time pay for part time work. Why doesn't he ever answer residents calls? The previous Mayor actual met with residents. Even if they were not contributors. Everything is screened and this Mayor is never "in".

Side roads are not "OK". It's a disgrace that this Mayor refuses to do his duty and ever declare a snow emergency. A pitiful shame that the President has to see this mess. No wonder he is here for a cup of coffee at GE and off ASAP.

Good job MC1....looks like you got their attention. But apparently they are having the gazette address it.

Am I saying this right....the City plows the streets which are too narrow. Then the plowed snow blocks sidewalks which were previously shoveled by the homeowner. Then, due to the City's incompetence and pushing snow back on the sidewalks, they ticket homeowners for not shoveling the snow the City plowed back on the sidewalks.

Really? Kinda like the Mayor walking his dog down a sidewalk and leaving the animals excrement in front of someones house and then ticketing the homeowner for not picking it up.

Yeah, that's the ticket!

Yup....I'd say you are saying it right!!

Schenectady taxpayers should have heated sidewalks with the taxes they pay.
Hell, Proctors does.

Unless the city used front end loaders to pick the snow up and then haul it away in dump trucks (which would  be an expensive proposition),  there is no way to plow a street without pushing some of the snow off to the side of the street thus blocking driveways and sidewalks.      So a homeowner may have to shovel or snowblow  his/her sidewalk and driveway more than once.   That has been happening for YEARS --- nothing new --- this is what happens when it snows.

Sure homeowners have had to shovel more than once, but when the City is standing by with 3 code enforcement officers to ticket people, that's offensive. Schenectady can't break their own laws and then have the homeowners pay for their incompetence. Pure and simple.

The ordinance gives the city residents 24 hours to clean their sidewalks -- so they are not issuing these citations as soon as the plow passes through.

The city is NOT breaking a law by plowing the snow ... and the nature of plowing means that one is moving the snow off the street and to the side.    The plow does not just make the snow magically disappear -- it moves it.
If you want the snow completely removed ---- go down to the city hall and say you are willing to pay higher taxes for the city to hire front end loaders and dump trucks to actually pick up and haul the snow away.

WEll I feel sorry for Maggie's diner.  That spot is a drag.  There is no one on Crane street except derelicts walking around.  Two murders in front of Mt. Pleasant Bakery.  That bakery would pull out of there if they could so my Rabbi tells me.  Even the Blue Ribbon cheesecake man couldn't make that spot work.  It is an ill-advised move for these people.  Do they have Metroplex money?

What I find most offensive, is that property owners will be ticketed and fined if they don't shovel the snow/ice from the sidewalks that the city plows put there.............and yet they don't tow the cars that are illegally parked!

And I still love the way these local government officials use the gazette to address the people! Amazing!

Right-And it's not "CITIES STRUGGLE" it's the one and only SCHENECTADY! Everyone else is copping. The difference between the towns and city is sickening.

Nothing's anyone's fault over there. A body falls on a demolition crew 3 weeks after a suspicious fire and it's the relatives fault? It's the little old lady who didn't break her rear going out on the ice that's the problem not the layers of DEMS in every department? Nobody can believe how far the Gazetto has now tanked. Official propaganda arm of the DEM morons.
