DV you wouldn't understand how much money it costs to raise 4 kids, pay your school/property taxes, feed and cloth your family, and then be asked to come up with a small fortune to fund a sewer district. It must be nice to just let someone else pay your bills.
I pay my own bills -- so you must be talking about yourself.

It's a lot cheaper to pay for yourself as you put it than what most normal people have to pay raising their families. The extra money to pay for sewers isn't there.
FROM DVRA number of times - Rotterdam residents have voted DOWN sewer referendums in specific neighborhoods in the town. The town officials can't just build the sewers without property owners approving the sewer district.
You have the same vicious cycle -- property owners b**ch and moan about high taxes .... developers say they need sewers to build commercial or residential projects to expand the town tax base ..... property owners vote DOWN the new sewer district .... developers go to another town that has sewers and other infrastructure ........ property owners b**ch and moan about high taxes ...... and on and on ......
At some point the property owners have to bite the bullet and invest in the infrastructure needed to move the town forward. Until then , we will never make any progress on lowering taxes.
You are correct DVR, and that may well happen here too. Many of the residents of the hamlet have begged us for a sewer district. They can't use their back yards because the neighbor at the top of the hill has a failing septic and goes into their yard. Not to mention the odor on a warm summer night. It is a quality of life issue for them as well as the fact they would like to see more business in town rather than drive 15 miles in any given direction. They realize the sewer district is the best way to accomplish their goals. That being said, at the end of the day they may challenge the wisdom of the Town Board and vote it down....that's ok. It will be their decision.
FROM GB There is not enough density there to warrant a sewer plant and system. Why are they even talking about it? Secondly the gripe is that the cost of a septic system is 15K. Do they think a sewer district is going to be cheaper? It won't happen. Infrastructure is wildly expensive to build considering EPA/ENCON rules that run up the price tag in the stratosphere. They are as likely to get sewers throughout Duanesburg as they are to get a daily shuttle to the moon. Getting the 'four corner' hooked into Delanson will is possible but when the price tag comes out this matter will quickly be settled in the minds of the property owners. Good luck anyway. Too bad they spent that 40 grand.
You know better than that GB. The homes in the hamlet are every bit as close as any neighborhood in Rotterdam. The people who live in our first two sewer districts.......Sewer District#1 Village Delanson and Quaker Street hamlet and Sewer District #2 Mariaville think it is the best thing the town has done. Yes, Duanesburg already has two substantial sewer districts...so start up that shuttle for me ok GB? Most had failing systems and the cost of $15k will pay for almost 20 years of Debt Service and Operations and Maintenance of the system. Right about the life expectancy of their $15k septic system. We will know more about the cost when we get the engineering report but we are thinking worst case scenario of $10million. The last district, which was completed in 2005 was about $6.5 to $7 million. I have told many who would be in the district the cost could be as high as $1k per year just to see if they were still interested and they said they were. I'm pretty sure I couldn't afford another $1k a year so it may well get shot down...time will tell...
10 Million is what I would guess, how funny that number is being tossed around. It was exactly what I think, maybe more.
Right about the thousand bucks per year, but when they find they need to hook in and mitigate the old septic all at THEIR cost (figure a lump sum of $2,000 to $6,000 per house cash up front) then you watch how P.O.ed they get. I am just being honest. I would be glad to place a wager. But ultimately because Vincent wants it, doesn't mean everyone else will bite at it (AS MUCH AS I think it is prudent to do it now rather than have the state put a friggin' gun to their heads to do it later)
ps- when I spoke of lack of density I meant TOWNWIDE, vs. in the hamlet.
pss-how much will an upgrade at the plant cost if there is ever another overflow event. ENCON will come in like the hurricane. Look at Nisky'
BTW- how is that library overhaul and Sheriff station coming along *ha ha*

My suggestion to duansburgians..........If you desire business growth in your community, bite the bullet and approve sewers NOW for the future. Don't make the same mistake that rotterdam has made. For decades they continued to expand, develop and build with no infrastructure.
Today rotterdam is a sh!thole town that was so backward in it's thinking, that it can no longer move forward.
Duanesburg is a beautiful community. Build it from the bottom up. Don't make the same mistake rotterdam did. Think of the future! Have a plan and a vision.

GB...you never change, you're still a wise guy! Bumble I agree with you....hopefully all will go well. Ya know I read in a couple of spots in this thread that Rotterdam is a sh!thole and its a horrible place. I love Rotterdam. It really is a "nice place to live." My father lived on Walnut Ave for 4 or 5 years before he moved to AZ. You have so much available to you and so many good people. I really hope you guys take the time to see what is right in your town 'cause there is a great deal. All of our towns are beautiful in their own way and all have room for improvement. We do what we can and that's all we can do.
