Rep. Peter King, a Republican from New York, is planning to introduce legislation that would make it illegal to bring a gun within 1,000 feet of a government official, according to a person familiar with the congressman's intentions.
King is chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee. The proposed law follows the Saturday shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) and a federal judge that left six dead, including the judge, and 14 wounded.
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, one of the nation's most outspoken gun-control advocates, is backing King's measure and is expected to put the weight of his pro-gun-control organization behind it.
"Yesterday everyone here joined in observing a moment of silence on behalf of the victims of the shooting, and today we come together to speak up for ways to prevent tragedies like this from occurring in the future, by adopting commonsense fixes to some of our broken gun laws," Bloomberg said Tuesday. "Civil debate is important, and I've long spoken out in favor of more cooperation and less antagonism, but I think it's true that the more we learn, the more it becomes clear that this case is fundamentally about a mentally ill drug abuser who had access to guns and shouldn't have."
Gun controls advocates will push not only for the legislation announced by King, but also for a bill proposed by Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.), which would limit the sale of high-capacity clips like the one used by alleged shooter Jared Lee Loughner

Rep. Dan Burton (R-Ind.) recently announced plans in the wake of the Arizona shooting to reintroduce a piece of legislation that would provide for the creation of Plexiglas-like wall that would enclose the House gallery, preventing visitors from being able to throw explosives onto the floor.
"The Architect of the Capitol shall enclose the visitors' galleries of the House of Representatives with More.. a transparent and substantial material, and shall install equipment so that the proceedings on the floor of the House of Representatives will be clearly audible in the galleries," the legislation reads, according to CBS News.

Among them are a 1915 bombing by a man protesting U.S. involvement in World War 1, the shooting of five members of Congress by Puerto Rican nationalists during a House vote in 1954, and a the placing of a bomb by the Weather Underground in a Senate bathroom in 1971. (The bomb went off early and no one was hurt.)

The first one would (no gun within 1,000 feet of a government official) would be hard to enforce.
The second one for a shield or partition between the public galleries and the House floor -- makes sense given the proximity of the galleries to House members -- however - I am not sure that it can be done easily without greatly altering the House chamber.

While Americans are murdered everyday by guns, our political elites feel they need special protection. How many politicians have been shot in your lifetime? There have been more gun murders in Schenectady in 2010-[8] than attempted murders on politicians.

Say this "feel good" legislation passes what happens if you live right next store to a politician, are they now breaking the law, are their rights now gone. It amazes me how stupid some of our officials are, if murder charges aren't enough to deter the criminal what makes them think this rule will, just more BS. If they want this then it should apply for everyone, that means none of their security staff is allowed to carry either, the secret service should now also be disarmed since to them it's the guns not the person that are the threat right

The government officials can't seem to understand that criminals and crazy people don't obey the laws that they pass. The only people that obey their stupid touchy feely laws are the honest law abiding people who wouldn't harm them anyway.
