120 years ago today -- January 2, 1890 -- the first female was hired to serve on the executive staff of the
President of the United States.   Hats off to all the women who serve in government at ALL levels.

More Notable Events on January 2:
1974 55 MPH speed limit imposed by Richard Nixon
1960 John F. Kennedy announces run for U.S. Presidency
1947 Mahatma Gandhi begins march for peace in East-Bengali
1870 Construction of Brooklyn Bridge begins
1788 Georgia is 4th state to ratify U.S. constitution

January 2, 1890:
Harrison welcomes Alice Sanger as first female staffer
Previous DayJanuary 2CalendarNext Day
President Benjamin Harrison welcomes Alice Sanger as the first female White House staffer on this day in 1890.

During an otherwise uneventful presidency remarkable only for allowing Congress a free-for-all in spending public funds, Alice Sanger's appointment may have been an olive branch to the growing women's suffrage movement that had gathered momentum during Harrison's presidency. In 1890, two of the most influential organizations involved in the women's suffrage movement, the American Woman Suffrage Association and the National Woman Suffrage Association, combined forces and became the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA). NAWSA represented a coalition of women's suffrage activists, social reformers and temperance advocates. Their demands included stronger female property rights, employment and educational opportunities for women, improved divorce and child custody laws and reproductive freedom.

Whether or not Sanger actively supported women's suffrage has been lost in the historical record, however, Harrison's appointment of Sanger indicated a cautious step toward strengthening female representation in government.

Sanger was also an avowed socialist, blaming what she saw as the evils of contemporary capitalism for the unsatisfactory conditions of young white working-class women. Her very personal views on this issue are evident in the last pages of What Every Girl Should Know.   Sanger remains a controversial figure. While she is widely credited as a leader of the modern birth control movement, and remains an iconic figure for the American reproductive rights movements, pro-life groups condemn Sanger's views, attributing her efforts to promote birth control to a desire to "purify" the human race through eugenics, and even to eliminate minority races by placing birth control clinics in minority neighborhoods.

Whatever her views, she was the first female member of a US President's executive staff.   That is what
I was recognizing yesterday .. on the 120th anniversary of her appointment,

women going to work after having children tend to more readily agree with socialist agendas......who is going to care for the kids before and after school?
a government subsidised program?
a neighbor with a "day care"...then when something happens---"we need regulation" blah blah blah.....
wic/food stamps etc.......baby's daddy in the picture but not reporting and/or baby's daddy just gone????

...you are a product of your environment, your environment is a product of your priorities, your priorities are a product of you......

The replacement of morality and conscience with law produces a deadly paradox.

That is obviously a fallacious argument.  Sara Palin went back to work after having kids and is hardly a socialist.

I have known many working mothers - including my own - who were anything but socialists.   So your
statement is fallacious.

That may be WHY HE DOES KNOW!

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."
