You claim "Point is--you were lucky your kids never found a gun and target practice? "
I said "I have two handguns in my home, both with COMBO TRIGGER-LOCKS and the ammo is in a locked box."

OWNED...

Hats off to you for being a responsible gun owner!! There are hundreds of thousands like you......including myself!

But what about those other 'dangerous' items? Do you also own a pool? A car? A cell phone? A knife? A candle? A book of matches? Shoe's with laces? A stove? A fireplace/wood burning stove? These are also dangerous if used incorrectly or in the wrong hands!

A terrible tragedy : (  We also own guns, no handguns, rifles for target practice. My son raised on the safe use. Never load a gun unless with an adult on the range. When on the range there are strict rules also for safety. Like getting the all clear to change targets etc.

I believe in the right to bear arms, I think that the handgun should have had a lock knowing that young kids were at the house alone at times, just common sense. The father must of thought because he had the ammo and gun seperate .......

As for the age of the kids staying home alone, it really depends on the kid. At age 11 I used to babysit three kids overnight, the youngest a toddler.

As others have said there are many things kids can get hurt on or worse, matches, swimming pools the list is long.

Reminds me of the terrible fire on McCllelan St. where the brother started the fire that his grandma and sister died in. It wasn't intentional, but he will have to live with that his whole life : (  He was not charged with manslaughter, can't understand why they are going after the 12 year old, it was an awful accident.

Right now two families are suffering horribly and my prayers go out to them. Saw the father of the child that was shot, unimaginable pain and grief.

the parent was an idiot for NOT teaching his son what how and why and the consequences that ensue AND the fact that LIFE IS NOT A VIDEO GAME. Guns
are not evil.......stupidity is....and ignorance is curable.....dont let emotion get the best of reason........

The replacement of morality and conscience with law produces a deadly paradox.
