Baby boom to mean more students Projections see growth in kindergarten enrollment

BY KATHLEEN MOORE Gazette Reporter

The flood of kindergartners will continue for at least another two years, according to the latest projections for Schenectady City School District enrollment.
Babies are booming in the city, and the birth rate seems to be returning to the level it was at more than a decade ago, according to the Capital District Regional Planning Commission.
Based on four years of birth data, researchers believe the city will gain more than 1,000 babies every year for the foreseeable future. That used to be normal, until the mid-1990s, Commission Executive Director Rocco Ferraro said.
But for the past decade, fewer babies were born. That let the school district get used to teaching 40 to 50 students fewer in each grade level.
When the first year of the baby boom hit in 2009, the district had to hire more kindergarten teachers at the beginning of the school year and convert spaces at Howe Early Childhood Center to add several classrooms at the last minute.
This year, there should have been an equally large number of kindergartners. But about 35 students didn’t materialize, easing the district’s burden.
The district commissioned a study to find out, in part, which year was a fluke: 2009’s overfl ow or 2010’s smaller enrollment.
The news isn’t good for the district’s budget. It was 2010 that was the fl uke.
“We’re projecting that the number of births will continue to be over 1,000,” Ferraro said.
There were 1,005 births in the age cohort that built this year’s kindergarten class. About 86 percent of the birth cohort go on to enroll at the school district, ac- cording to averages based on the past 20 years of enrollment, Ferraro said. ........................>>>>....................>>>>....................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01103&AppName=1

Never say things can't get worse. Wonder the percentage born to single mothers? Another reason to donate to your favorite private school scholarship fund AND support immediate opening of a Schenectady Charter school.

The previous superintendent used such "anticipated numbers" to justify leasing additional classroom
space .. and then later admitted that he had inflated the numbers.

Although I understand the need to do some long range planning, I am personally skeptical about
these projections given the poor track record of previous projections and the past incidents of
inflating the numbers to get more state aid or other concessions.

Yeah, projections.  Just like the projections from your dem buddies spending millions of tax dollars downtown would make for a better city and lower taxes, huh?   Your dem buddies projections were absolutely totally the opposite.   By the way, have they found the gunmen who robbed KFC downtown in daylight during family dinner time?   Have they found the gunmen who robbed Cornells in the broad daylight?  Have then found the daytime (the time of day when children would have been walking home from school) stabber on Van Vranken yet?

You STILL have not provided one teeny weeny shred of proof to support that comment you posted that claims the FBI says crime is down in Schenectady.  We're all waiting for that.   You won't provide proof because you CAN'T provide proof because it just doesn't exist.

Great combination....Savage, Gillen, Stratton, Hull, and Ely.  Keep robbing from the taxpayers, run this city down big time, and DV's wild imagination says this is Schenectady's renaissance.  ROFLMAO

speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.
