Under the heading the more things change the more they stay the same, news that Schenectady High School is again on persistently lowest achieving schools in the State. I thought that group of liberal goody-goodies promised to improve education and cut taxes? Millions wasted on "academies" and prep programs. This reminds me of Gordon Gecko in Wall Street-"I replaced half the vice presidents and nothing changes." But the school taxes skyrocket.

Instead of going to back neighborhood grade schools, slashing busing and putting the 9th grade back in middle schools these liberals accomplished nothing. Can't wait to see the budget cuts they've been working on-lol. The high school is still overcrowded with too many electives. As far as openness, the Bored lied to the public about the rosary settlement. Mr Yagielski should be supported for trying to dump the school attorney and ending the idiotic rosary ban. Now end the magnet madness, reopen Howe as a neighborhood school and go back to 7-9 middle schools.

Schenectady High is once again on the persistently worst school list for both academic performance and graduation rates. Nobody said it was in the 10 worst schools. Albany High is also on the worst list, if it makes you feel any better. It's not just that they are so bad but they spend so much ($170 MILLION) to be so bad. How about spending less and still be bad?

The liberal goody-goodies were elected to improve things and focus on education. Now many of the same suspects have formed the Alliance Party. How about accomplishing one thing before moving onto to City Hall? They will do to City Hall what they did to the school district? No change you can believe in.

That is the Harlem Charter School ....     actually  Rochester, Syracuse and Poughkeepsie have the worst
CITY school districts.

I still think we need to merge all 6 school districts in the county into 1 school district.

Stop wasting millions of dollars building new buildings in one district while proposing to close two buildings
in the next district (one of the buildings is less than 15 years old).

If Schenectady City Schools decline any further .. the state may just dissolve the school district anyway.

How can they decline any further? The State should have come in last year when they refused to fire The Mad Bomber. This news is a big fat F for the liberal elites who ran a party that stood for nothing. One of them actually voted YES! to give the disgraced old Super a huge going away present. Real openness-taxpayers go to hell.

In 7 months they have done NOTHING to address the lack of stimulus money coming next year. The City budget isn't the only one with a huge whole in it. SCSD taxpayers are facing a huge 15% increase in school taxes unless these liberal elites eliminate separate academies and go back to neighborhood schools.

Apparently - looking at the ratings for Rochester, Syracuse and Poughkeepsie City Schools ...
Schenectady could be doing worse.

We're 619 out of 640.

We are in the bottom 4%.

Most of us would consider that indefensible.

Edit:  Although to be completely fair.  I believe that it is next to impossible to make up for the poor parenting that I think we see in today's inner-city families.

Instead of looking at what the 618 School Districts are doing better-DVR wants to focus on the 21 doing worse. This is not Harlem nor the South Bronx. The parents are worse than back in the day-but so are the administrators. With the $170 MILLION being dumped into this District these results are totally unacceptable.

For once someone has to get hot under the collar in this town. This is pathetic and if the School Bored has to be thrown over again so be it. The taxpayers are fed up with paying so much for continuing horrible results.

On this note, it is apparent that the lucrative welfare doled out in schenectady combined with non-profits everywhere in the city are not making a dent with this problem. Crime, taxes and under achieving schools are on the rise! Ya just can't continually throw money at an unsolvable problem and expect it to work. It is clearly NOT working for schenectady.

What I find most unsettling is that schenectaday has now been classified as an 'inner city'!

I was just pointing out that there the Schenectady CSD were not the worst and that 3 major city
school districts were worse.   I was certainly NOT defending the situation.

The fact that so many charter schools were in the bottom 10  ... reconfirms my belief that charter
schools are a bad idea.   Furthermore, I contend that charter schools take resources away from the
city school districts  thus making the problems in the city school districts worse.

I never said or suggested that we focus on the ones doing worse.   Just was pointing out that 3 major
city school districts were in the bottom 10.  It really does not make for good discussion -- to put words in other peoples' mouths or imply something that was never intended.

I would like your explanation on how charter schools take away resources from the city school district.  The charter school takes less tax money to pay for the students that go there, essentially leaving the additional money for the regular school district to use on other students.  It ends up that the school district has extra money, they're still not spending it appropriately.

Quoted Text
How Are Charter Schools Funded?

Charter schools are public schools. Like district public schools, they are funded according to enrollment (also called average daily attendance, or ADA), and receive funding from the district and the state according to the number of students attending. The ways and amounts at which charters are funded compared to their district counterparts differ dramatically in an individual state and even in individual communities within a state. Nationwide, on average, charter schools are funded at 61 percent of their district counterparts, averaging $6,585 per pupil compared to $10,771 per pupil at conventional district public schools. For more information and state-by-state funding comparisons, go to Following the Money.

Unlike traditional district schools, most charter schools do not receive funding to cover the cost of securing a facility. Conversion schools begin with established capital, namely the school and its facilities. A few states provide capital funding to start-up schools, and some start-up schools are able to take over available unused district space, but most must rely on other, independent means. Recent federal legislation provides funding to help charters with start-up costs, but the task remains imposing.

Per http://www.edreform.com/charter_schools/funding/, NY state funds the charter school at 73%, leaving an additional 27% for the school district to still spend.

The DV arguments are simply red herrings to avoid the truth.

The TRUTH of the situation, and according to the New York State Education Department (www.nysed.gov), the State Education Commissioner David Steiner has determined that the Schenectady High School is a Persistently Lowest Achieving (PLA) school in ALL of New York State. With a graduation rate of barely 58% (that includes those who didn't graduate until after summer courses were completed), the High School is failing the students.

The High School can reorganize and in some cases, can REPLACE 50% of the existing staff. Look at the Schenectady School website, the high school has over ten administrators....over two million wasted on repeat positions. Someone needs to audit and fast!
