SCHENECTADY -- Two men brandished a sawed-off, double-barreled shotgun and fled with cash after a brazen armed robbery Sunday morning at Cornell's restaurant, police said.
The robbery occurred at about 10:35 a.m. at the Italian restaurant, located at 39 N. Jay St. in the city's Little Italy neighborhood off lower Union Street, police said. The restaurant was not open at the time of the robbery.
Both robbers wore black hoodie sweat shirts, and one wore a red mask and the other a white bandanna to conceal their faces.
It was unclear how much money was stolen, but the robbers placed the cash in a red backpack one of them carried, police said.
Witnesses said they made their getaway in an older model tan Lexus, police said.
An employee who answered the phone at the restaurant sounded shaken and declined to speak about the incident as police investigated the crime scene.
Cornell's is a family-owned Italian restaurant started more than 60 years ago by Nicholas and Pasqualina Cornell when it was located on VanVranken Avenue. It's now owned and operated by their daughter, Joann Cornell-Aragosa, who began working in the business at age 5. Her son, Jim, helps her run the eatery, which has been located on North Jay Street since 2003.
It was unclear whether the restaurant, which was open Saturday night, would be open Sunday night for dinner as scheduled.

Cornells could and should move out of the gut of the city. There is no question that their food is great. Perhaps they would consider relocating to rotterdam, nisky or glenville! They would still do a great business.

Hull's defense of not paying nuthin to the City for Union College's police and fire protection brought down the house at the Alliance Party meeting. Yes, they will waste it but better your money than ours.
