El Shaddai, El Shaddai, El-Elyon na Adonia, Age to age You're still the same, By the power of the name. El Shaddai, El Shaddai, Erkamka na Adonai, We will praise and lift You high, El Shaddai.
Through your love and through the ram, You saved the son of Abraham; Through the power of your hand, Turned the sea into dry land. To the outcast on her knees, You were the God who really sees, And by Your might, You set Your children free.
El Shaddai, El Shaddai, El-Elyon na Adonia, Age to age You're still the same, By the power of the name. El Shaddai, El Shaddai, Erkamka na Adonai, We will praise and lift You high, El Shaddai.
Through the years You've made it clear, That the time of Christ was near, Though the people couldn't see What Messiah ought to be. Though Your Word contained the plan, They just could not understand Your most awesome work was done Through the frailty of Your Son.

Hey DVR--Christ doesn't enter into the Hannukah celebration. Your song is not appropriate here but would be very nice on a Christmas thread. Please remove it. This would be something that might come from the "Seed of Abraham" or some other Jew for Jesus sect. Really inappropriate.

Catholic Christians are proud of the Judaic roots of our faith. The song El Shaddai by Michael Card is one that I find very beautiful for this season as we celebrate Hanukkah and the people of the First Advent and the coming of Christ and the people of the New Advent.
I have no plans to remove the song.

Sorry DVR--you got this wrong too. ALLChristians should be proud of their Judaic roots (familiar with the Jesse Tree?) However, when you want to sing a song about Hannukah than it should be a a Hannukah song. The minute you bring Christ into that scenario you show your lack of understanding of our roots. El Shaddai is a great song for this second week of Advent. But Advent Ain't Hannukah. Hannukah is the celebration of the re-dedication of the temple. Advent, as you know, is a time we use to prepare for the coming of Christ. Hannukah is NOT the old Advent. Your theology is a bit off. Hannukah IS NOT Jewish Christmas. I might have to report you to the theology Department at Siena College. Clearly you don't get that you need to move this post to a different thread. Why not start one called "Maranatha" or "Soon and Very Soon?"

One word of advice to you .. if you don't like my post .. ignore .. I am NOT moving it. You can report me to whomever you'd like. You can take a full page ad out in the New York Times if it makes you happy. I never said that Advent was Hanukkah ... I said that the Jewish people are the people of the First Advent (you said "old" .. I said first) My theology is quite sound ... it is your insistence on changing words that I said or twisting things that is the problem.

Well VR I take issue with your post enough to NOT IGNORE IT. It is misleading. This kind of post and your thinking leads me to believe that you would also conduct a Seder ritual and work the Last Supper into it and then say Happy Passover. Your post is offensive to those of the Jewish faith. "and the people of the First Advent and the coming of Christ and the people of the New Advent." by DVR
Jews ARE NOT Advent people...not now and not in early times. Advent is Christian--our time to prepare and reflect on the coming of Christ and what that means to us in our lives. How do you NOT get that. It is not a matter of Christmas trumping Hannukah. Your post, although a beautiful song for Christians, IS NOT A Hanukkah sentiment. It doesn't matter how many Hebrew words you use. It will not make it Hanukkah.
As a member of the Dicoesan Jewish Catholic Dialogue Committee as well as my position in the Capital Area Council of Churches, I apologize to All those of the Jewish faith who read this board and viewed this post of DVR. DVR's super-sessionist attitude is clearly one we denounce.
We live in a dangerous time, Iran at the ready to wipe out Israel, North Korea chomping at the bit to start nuclear aggression and lots of other terrible acts here and abroad. The Hanukkah commemoration occurred in B.C.E. and gives the world hope. It also reminds ALL of us that miracles can and do happen. This thread was to be greet those of the Jewish faith to have a Happy Hanukkah. Another thread can deal with Christmas and its true meaning.
The first Advent was the period when the world awaited the birth of the Messiah .. thus the Jewish people are the people of the first Advent and they are still in that phase. For Christians, we are people people of the New Advent awaiting the second coming of the Messiah at the end of time. We are Advent people every day of our lives -- not just in the 4 weeks of the Liturgical Calendar that are designated as Advent. We are a people waiting with hope-filled anticipation for the second coming of the Messiah EVERY DAY of our lives. As for the theological soundness of this approach, I cite the late Pope John Paul II who preached and wrote often on the New Advent and I have discussed this topic with at least 3 Cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church. (one is now deceased and the other two are now retired from active ministry) I also have some friendships with Jewish rabbis - and we have discussed this very topic and others -- they found nothing offensive in my thinking. I really don't need Boomer's approval to believe what I believe .. especially since a person who served as Pope preached about it and 3 persons who were Princes of the Roman Catholic Church (and there are many others who believe similarly) have spoken about the same belief. By the way, one of those cardinals was very active in the interfaith dialogue with Jewish leaders. There is NOTHING in what I have said that should be or is offensive to the Jewish people.
As for your idiotic comments about the Seder and the Last Supper -- you are making stuff up and trying to blame me for things that I never said or thought.

DVR unless you have spoken to Cardinal Cassidy (yes my dear friend) or Cardinal Caspar, then I could give a rats-a$$ which Cardinal you spoke to because I don't remember seeing you at the Vatican residence in NYC when the late great Rabbi Leon Klenicki got the highest honor the church gives--to a non-Catholic--Knighthood in the Order of St. Gregory. Sean Cardinal O'Malley's office called me personally to ask me to be there. So don't try that crap with me. You have no idea who you are speaking to. And "Jewish" rabbis??? As opposed to what Catholic rabbis or Muslim rabbis? There is not rabbi in the Capital District that supports your post. How do I know that? Becuse I sent it to the Board of Rabbis of the Capital District. Quit while you can. I am now sending it to Fr. Kane who heads the Ecumenical and Interrreligious Affairs Office. You have made a terrible error in your judgement sir.

Good for you -- I have said NOTHING that is offensive to anyone ... except in your imagination. You made up a bunch of stuff ... claiming I said stuff about Hanukkah and Advent being the same -- which I most certainly did not say. Then you claimed that I celebate Seder and the Last Supper and say "Happy Passover" -- which I most certainly have never even thought of .. let alone done. In fact, the only times that I have celebrated Seder was when invited to share in a Seder dinner with Jewish friends that had invited me ... and once I attended a Seder service at Saint Paul's Church ( I was only a guest -- so I had nothing to do with planning the program -- I just attended as a guest). I knew Cardinal O'Malley when he was Bishop of the diocese of New Bedford, MA -- he took a bunch of us out to dinner -- he is a very nice guy.

What planet do you live on? Go back and read your song. It's Hanukkah and you post something about the coming of Christ. Here is how it read: "This kind of post and your thinking leads me to believe that you would also conduct a Seder ritual and work the Last Supper into it and then say Happy Passover." Leads me to believe--doesn't say you did it. Maybe you should ask your Jewish friends about the Hanukkah celebration. If they are Jews, they will tell you it is a VERY MINOR holiday on the Jewish calendar that doesn"t include Christ or the coming of the Messiah.
