One of the reasons that many stores are closing their mall stores is the high square foot charge that the mall charges them and the stores that are staying open with improvements are the ones that Friendly Corporate owns outright. Many stores closed in the Rotterdam Mall for the same reason.

This combined with lower than most malls, foot traffic, rotterdam's mall is failing. Most people who desire higher end stores, other than dollar stores and walmart, seek products outside of rotterdam. The way I see rotterdam, is that it lowered it's bar when walmart moved in. Dollar stores, General Dollar, Family Dollar, Price Right and Second hand shops became the norm.
People will shop Mohawk Commons, Colonie Center, Clifton Park and Crossgates for quality, quantity with superior products and selection. Rotterdam economically has almost hit bottom in regards to retail.
Remember.....businesses do marketing research BEFORE they set up business in any municipality. So when you see dollar store, discount stores and second hand shops popping up in your area, while the higher end businesses are moving out............well.......you know where your town is headed.IMHO

I haven't been in Colonie Center -- except when LL Bean first opened -- for years, and Crossgates Mall in probably 20 years. There is nothing in Clifton Park that interests me -- so I do most of my shopping locally. Mohawk Commons is a great place and Rotterdam Square Mall could revive if they spruce it up and bring in a different mix of stores.

What a shame!! I guess the unemployment stats are gonna rise again!! And the economy will again stay stagnant.

Friendly's was never as good as its former competitor Flavorland -- and its more recent competitors like Denny's.

If they got the riff raff out of the Mall more people would shop there.....there is no rules for the unruly....it's a shame that the Town has allowed this behavior to exist, especially on the week-ends.....The TB should have been involved and make the rule such as Crossgates has regarding unruly behavior .....Thank goodness Walmart's wasn't at the other end of Town....the only thing good about that would have been the police could have walked to take care of business..... But keep building and/or rebuilding banks, bars, and drug stores.....and they are needed in that order....Get it??
Freindly's has great ice cream....thanks goodness ....I hope I can still find it in the grocery stores...

I don't know about Hannaford, but I'm pretty sure that Price Chopper does carry it.

And there's enough pharmacies around for everybody to get their drug of choice (or you can go down on any corner down on the Metroplex Mile and speak to an undocumented pharmacist), but that didn't stop you for cheering for more business at the CVS, did it? Doesn't this go against everything that you wanted the CVS to bring in? Oh well, I guess as long as you're a liberal, everything is perfect when you have "YOUR PEOPLE" in office, or "THE PERFECT PLAN THAT WE'LL TALK ABOUT AFTER OUR PEOPLE GET INTO OFFICE."
Friendly's was probably the last 'family' restaurant that catered to the kids. Anyone with kids can attest to that. The wolf rd store probably won't be missed quite as much as in the smaller towns. God only knows that the wolf rd area is wall to wall restaurants. However, smaller towns will miss it's presence. And although the economy is probably playing the largest role in their demise, one can't help but notice how the areas surrounding these stores have changed. In rotterdam alone, the altamont ave location is now considered an almost high risk area....expecially at night due to the influx of the city undesirables. Same for the rotterdam square mall.
It's too bad since the familys/kids will lose out, the employees will suffer as will the economy. Just more empty buildings.
