Police security cameras expand in city
Could be linked to dispatchers

BY KATHLEEN MOORE Gazette Reporter

A few years ago, the city’s security cameras were mainly checked by one county employee. On some occasions, no one even checked the cameras before they automatically recorded over their tapes, erasing potentially valuable evidence.
Now, as the Police Department nears its 90th camera, with seven more now being connected to the servers, even rank-and-fi le officers are using the cameras as an invaluable resource.
“The Police Department is integrating the cameras more than ever before,” District Attorney Robert Carney said. “Even patrol officers have taken a look at the cameras to see what it’s captured. Detectives, everyone is looking at the cameras. It’s not just one person.”
The result has been far more leads, in license plate numbers, suspect descriptions and contraband thrown aside on camera. It’s also proven useful in court, Carney said.
Chief Mark Chaires is such a proponent for the cameras that he now wants them blanketing the city’s high-crime areas, Carney said.
“The chief has ambitious ideas of saturated coverage in Hamilton Hill, Vale and Mont Pleasant,” Carney said, adding that no one has the money to add that many cameras.
“It’s ambitious. It’s not just a matter of the cost of the cameras. It’s the cost of the servers, and the signal gets degraded if there’s too many cameras operating on the same pattern.”
But Carney has his own ambitious ideas. He’s lobbying for the camera project to play a key role in the proposed county dispatch center. .................>>>>..................>>>>................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r00902&AppName=1

Heck, they're doing wonders in Mt. Pleasant, downtown and Eastern Ave ... catching all those criminals (they got the two shooters on State St., right? - how about the other crimes?)

No, instead they're using them to look up people's license plates to make sure their registrations, inspections and insurance is up to date. Grab the $50 tickets instead of getting the murderers and criminals.

Great investment there.

Why doesn't the chief want to return to a cop on a beat? Or start an anti-gang strategy? The same failed plans over and over again. There was a shotgun shooting outside of Bombers and still no arrests.

High crime areas? That's the entire City. It's an "invaluable resource" that's why they record over it? This is a typical Gazetto attempt to distract from the real story. Crime in the City is exploding under Mayor SOS/The idiot all DEM rubber stamps and no one in City Hall has a clue about what to do.

There already are some cameras in Mt. Pleasant or there were back about 6 or 7 years ago.

I have my doubts as to how effective they are .. although some "experts" have argued they have been
effective in other neighborhoods of the city and elsewhere.

Supremely instituted cameras.

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."
