ALBANY, N.Y. -- Albany County's Legislature talked Monday about potentially raising the sales tax to bring in more revenue.
The county is looking at a $40 million deficit. In the proposed budget, homeowners could see a property tax increase of more than 14-percent, and 511 county employees could lose their jobs through layoffs or early retirement incentives. The closing of the Albany County Nursing Home and loss of services are also at stake.
The sales tax is now at 8-percent, but the county is considering raising it to 8-and-a-half-percent. Residents have doubts the hike would be temporary.
Legislators say it's just one option they're considering. There are no plans for a vote at this point.

That says it all. There is no such thing as a temporary tax. When will the additional tax for the Metroplex be withdrawn? Previously, it was in addition to the 8% sales tax. Now, it is incorporated into it, instead. |

what was that percentage of tax for REMS???? oh yeah....probably going up just like insurance rates.....WE ARE NOT STUPID BUT WE ARE LAZY..... |

Why don't they double it. Then they make life there twice as good. Just think how they can "invest" all of that. The government can't afford not to. Maybe even triple it, if raising it is such a good thing. |

They are almost as stunad as Schenectady County. But they haven't passed a regressive sales tax increase to fund rich developers and governmental gin mills. |
