Golub Corp. moves up on Forbes list The Business Review Date: Friday, November 5, 2010, 9:49am EDT - Last Modified: Friday, November 5, 2010, 1:33pm EDT
The parent of the Price Chopper supermarket chain rose in the latest Forbes magazine rankings of the nation’s largest private companies. Golub Corp., headquartered in Schenectady, New York, ranked No. 112 on the Forbes list, which was released this week. The ranking is 17 spots higher than Golub’s spot on the 2009 list. Golub is the only regional company on the list, which ranks businesses by revenue. Golub had revenue of $3.4 billion last year and 23,000 employees, including about 7,400 full- and part-time workers in the Capital Region. Forbes said the company has almost 130 Price Chopper stores in New York, Vermont, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Forbes also noted that Golub employees collectively own 52 percent of company stock.
Revenue of $3.4 BILLION !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But Susie Savage tells the poor struggling homeowners in Schenectady that they have to pay Golub's property taxes!!!!!!!!!! (And of course DV thinks that is fair to the poor people in the city)

Golub's new office complex is owned by Galesi. Golub 'rents' from them. Is Galesi paying property taxes on that building????
Galesi also owns the DSS building. The county rents from them. Is Galesi paying property taxes on that building?????

We are shocked? This has been going on for a decade! Try to find a politician or party to address this issue. You can't! To the lazy Republican Party, it's easier to get 10 - $1000 contributions from wealthy businesses, than to get 100 - $100 contributions form the finacially stressed taxpayers that are footing the tax bill for the tax exemptions granted to the wealthy businesses. You don't want to piss off Neil Golub, he might not do the political ad for Farley next time.
And DVOR thinks we should be grateful to be paying the taxes for developers like Galesi.

That is NOT what I said .. but you continue to spread your lies. Golub can afford to pay taxes and should be paying full taxes on every property that he owns. When his tax exemption phases out -- they should not be renewed. If he wants to do business in this town, he should pay property taxes like any other business.
Personally, I shop at Garbriel's, Greulich's, the COOP, and Sahrs' -- and occasionally at Fresh Market, BJs and Sam's Club.

Oh...When tax exemptions "phase out". I know you're thrilled about BBL(the second largest commercial developer in the Capital District) getting $100K from Metroplex to build the Recovery Room. I can't wait to see if they also get a property tax exemption for gracing Rotterdam with a gin mill. Maybe the head of the Rotterdam IDA will let the Recovery Room to hook into the Mallozzi sewer line at no charge. Like that's never been done before.
DVOR, do you believe the new Recovery Room should receive property tax exemptions?

I don't think, but I can't be certain, that the repblicans have made the poor pay as much in taxes to the wealthy. The DOT building which is aassessed for almost 9 milloion has only a $1.3 million tax exemption, that was a republican project and the tax exemption ends in a year, 2012. Savage has it set that the poor in the city pay the property taxes for the wealthy til the end of time, she has made it so there is no end date for the exemptions.
Maybe DV will buy a house in the city after everyone else either leaves or loses their home to tax forclosure. I wonder why Savage chooses not to live in the city.

I have no problem with the Recovery Room getting $100,000 to build -- if it is a low interest or zero interest loan that they would have to pay back.
I have said all along that tax exemptions or PILOTS should only be given a) as a last bargaining chip in a negotiation to lure a business and b) in extremely rare situations -- I think that tax exemptions or PILOTS have been given out to "loosely" in the past (and this happened when BOTH GOP and Dems ran the IDA and Metroplex). My criteria for a property tax exemption or PILOT would factor in how much sales tax the business would generate -- does the sales tax revenue generated make up for the property tax revenue lost by the exemption or PILOT .. or in the case of a commercial office type business or a manufacturing/industrial type business does the number of jobs created (really created ..not just promised) and sales tax revenue generated from purchasing materials and supplies from local vendors .. offset the property tax revenue lost
I also believe that the"phase out" period for tax exemptions or PILOTS should be reduced from the current 15 years to less than 5 years. Under the current system, the newly built or renovated building is most likely obsolete LONG before the 15 year period is up. The exemption should not be 100% .. probably not more than 50% .. 50%-1st year, 40%-2nd year, 30%- 3rd year, 20%- 4th year, 10% - 5th year, 0% beyond6th year.
Finally, I believe that binding legal language with financial sanctions should be included -- if the project does NOT generate the number of jobs promised or if the business "moves on" to another location to avoid paying property taxes when the exemption or PILOT has expired.

However, the republicans' exemptions are PARTIAL AND have end dates, The tax exemptions that the savage gave out are 100% AND are FOREVER. Once again, the proof is in the OFFICIAL records of the county. The exemptions given out by savage virtually all have NO END DATES.
And how stupid is this? DV says give out tax exemptiuons if the salex tax revenue offsets the loss of property tax revenue. So, exempt the rich politically connected people from paying property taxes. Remember, DV, the sales tax IS NOT, I REPEAT IS NOT paid by the wealthy politically connected business !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is paid by the taxpayers!!!!!!!
And sales tax is NOT given to the city and the towns dollar for dollar. Using small numbers, if the city generated $15 in sales tax, and Rotterdam generated $10, and Nisky generated $9 and Glenville generated $7, well, when it comes to dolling it out, the city might be given $9, i.e. a net loss. So, once again, savage and DV cheer for making the low income people pay the taxes of the rich.
DV, Metroplex was NOT planned in order to give away our tax dollars to the well-heeled and try to replace that with sales tax. The extra percent or something in sales tax was to be used to "fix up" downtown. Maybe a project would be done so that a building would be fixed up IN PART out of that extra percent of sales tax. Then the business would be open, paying taxes on previously perhaps abandoned properties that resulted in no taxes, and then the business would generate sales tax. But what you savage woman did is decide to give away our extra percent of sales tax AND give the well heeled millionaires COMPLETE 100% property tax exemptions. And it was NEVER NEVER the intention of plex money to keep bailing people out, like the VanDyck and the Big House.
By the way, the "I have said all along...." Gee, can't find a post where you said that. Seems like the truth is hurting and now it's grasping at straws to find a more moderate position

In the aftermath of the Savage failed campaign, and as the resulting Metroplex house of cards begins to colapse, democrats are going to be running for cover and repositioning themselves.
Ms. Savage, be prepared to get thrown under the bus. HONK! HONK!

You mean Golub should pay property taxes like.....um......villa italia?? Do you buy yer pastries from villa italia? Do you buy yer appliances from marcella's?

There is only ONE way to put an end to the metroplex, BEFORE they ask for another increase to their 'give-a-ways'.
A REFERENDUM!! Gather 5000 votes COUNTYWIDE. And an extra 2500 for good measure. It would then be on the ballot next november. It gives those who support abolishing this beast ONE YEAR to get the REAL message out!! It's the taxpayers that will have to take the bull by the horns on this one!!!

If the Mallozzi family is involved in this new venture, I am ok with that. They have an excellent track record of building small businesses. The problem with Rotterdam is that for too many years we have been griping and moaning about high property taxes then when a legitimate business comes along .. certain folks come out of the wood work to fight the new business venture.
DVOR switch from his initial remarks on the Recovery Room thread.
I have no problem with the Recovery Room getting $100,000 to build -- if it is a low interest or zero interest loan that they would have to pay back.
Not a low interest loan - A GRANT!
