The City DEMS refuse to file bankruptcy. That should have been done years ago to void outrageous give away contracts. They will never do that.
They would rather bankrupt you. No matter how high they raise taxes, how much they pay the golf pro, how many cars are given away, they have a group of 5,000 morons that will vote the straight DEM line.
The City almost had to declare bankruptcy after 12 years of GOP mayors running City Hall. Mayor Stratton and the Democratic City Council brought it back from the brink of disaster -- disaster brought on by failed GOP mayors.
Pools and Parks are NOT a luxury -- $40,000 was given by a non-profit to help keep pools open next year -- I am sure that other non-profits like local churches would be willing to chip in something to help the city out. I plan to bring it up at my parish's next Pastoral Council meeting.

DVOR have you looked at the deficit that the city/county faces and they have no way to raise money other than raise taxes and the taxpayer is at the end of their rope with the raising taxes issue. People are leaving the city for parts unknown to flee the high taxes and future taxes that they fear are coming. This city had better get someone that knows how to balance a budget and cut spending or Schenectady surely will go bankrupt.
When was there a GOP mayor and how many GOP members of the council did he have to support his budget decisions?
"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."
If GB can't remember when there was a Republican Mayor in Schenectady -- he/she better go to the library and look it up.

I don't, so I respectfully ask. It must have been in the past few months the way you keep blaming "GOP mayors." DV, since you know so much about the city and county's financial condition and all, and why there is trouble brewing, and you know where you fixed blame- do tell answer my question since I am apparently not as informed as you. Will I get you to provide the cold hard facts as to my above question?

Mayor SOS brought the City back from financial disaster? That's good one. That's why he created a $13 MILLION deficit and has to layoff fire fighters and freeze police hiring. In the middle of a gang war. He can't knock down abandoned homes. He refuses to go after Union and Proctor's for anything. He wants to raise record taxes another 6% and raise the garbage and water fees. He also created the garbage tax which is a double tax. He will blame State cuts of $1 million for the $13 Million Stratton deficit. No wonder he is seeking State employment. Maybe he and his fast thinkers in finance can all work for the Comptroller's office-since they are so good with figures-ROTFLMAO!!
Seven years ago Mayor Al was Mayor-he had to contend with DEMS in 6 of 7 seats. The DEM Party has been destroying the City for 35 straight years. It is up to the City Council to approve the budgets and make cuts if any.

Why should the non-profits pay to help keep pools open? Many of them are struggling, but not all. When the city was going to have a curb fee, you were saying your church perhaps should leave and move to it's land on Hamburg St, ok I understand you were sort of just saying that regarding the curb fee. But now, your suggestion your church pay to keep parks and pools open?
DV, church members already pay taxes, some probably pay to the city and county, others just to the county (and their respective towns. These people are already overtaxed.
Instead of having struggling non-profits pay, how about all the tax exemptions downtown are stopped and make those well-heeled pay.
What is the logic to making lower income city residents suffer with less service and high taxes while the rich businesses pay nothing? Look what has happened thanks to having the rich and well heeled not pay their taxes. Public safety is cut.
However I might also add that pools and parks are a luxury. What I mean by that is that they are not as necessary as the fire department, the police, street and sewer services. Since you don't own a home you obviously don't understand. When you want a pool in your backyard, but your house also needs a new driveway, and you don't have the money for both, well, of course the pool is a luxury. Repairs to a house and property, paying the power bill and the like take precedence over a pool, flowers, picnic table and a bench.
It's sad that Savage has caused such a financial disaster affecting the city taxpayers by her forcing the struggling homeowners to pay the taxes of the well heeled downtown. Giving even one dollar exemption to all these for-profit businesses at a time when life saving services are being cut, and crime is running rampant in the city is the stupidest decision any government official could do. And further, failing to take away the tax exemptions at a time when pools and parks are being cut is an equally stupid decision
Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent. Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.
What churches would you be talking about? The Catholic churches are broke. Maybe the Mehtodist church downtown would have some extra bucks and interest.

If they didn't have to pay Hubbard's outrageous "assessment" along with legal fees, condoms, needles and more they'd be back at the prosperous condition they were PRE-Hubbard. Again, more liberal policies. The Roman Catholic Church in Albany, is broken. The Roman Catholic Church, in the rest of the country, which I proudly belong to, is not. Conservative priests and bishops are fairing very well outside Albany. For instance, my parish, of approximately 1900 families, collects $5-$8k per week, between $10-12k during Holidays. And that's in a military town, full of transient families, in the deep south (formerly Baptist territory).
Only in Albany does the assessment equal 60-70% of the weekly offerings.

my parish made a voluntary contribution to the city earlier in this decade -- I wouldn't say that our city churches are broke .. finances are tight but none is broke.

The last night was historic one for City politics. Over 200 people packed the PC Center to hear about the new Alliance Party. Separate presentations were made about the highest taxes in the Nation, inter governmental issues, nonprofits and the DEM machine. Mr. Lewis made an interesting comment about the City's sales tax revenue from the County rising a big $50,000 in 10 years. Great job 6 all DEM County Legislators "representing" the City-NOT. And you want this joke County Legislature to continue?
The 35 year death grip by the DEMS on City politics is coming to an end. Many of the people present represented neighbor or taxpayer organizations. Something is brewing. They don't have all the answers but are inclusive, listening and asking the right questions. It sure beats the one party DEM crapola of picking every City/County candidate in a smoke filled room.
