Yesterday NPR fired me for telling the truth. The truth is that I worry when I am getting on an airplane and see people dressed in garb that identifies them first and foremost as Muslims.
This is not a bigoted statement. It is a statement of my feelings, my fears after the terrorist attacks of 9/11 by radical Muslims. In a debate with Bill O’Reilly I revealed my fears to set up the case for not making rash judgments about people of any faith. I pointed out that the Atlanta Olympic bomber -- as well as Timothy McVeigh and the people who protest against gay rights at military funerals -- are Christians but we journalists don’t identify them by their religion.
And I made it clear that all Americans have to be careful not to let fears lead to the violation of anyone’s constitutional rights, be it to build a mosque, carry the Koran or drive a New York cab without the fear of having your throat slashed. Bill and I argued after I said he has to take care in the way he talks about the 9/11 attacks so as not to provoke bigotry.
This was an honest, sensitive debate hosted by O’Reilly. At the start of the debate Bill invited me, challenged me to tell him where he was wrong for stating the fact that “Muslims killed us there,” in the 9/11 attacks. He made that initial statement on the ABC program, "The View," which caused some of the co-hosts to walk off the set. They did not return until O’Reilly apologized for not being clear that he did not mean the country was attacked by all Muslims but by extremist radical Muslims.
I took Bill’s challenge and began by saying that political correctness can cause people to become so paralyzed that they don’t deal with reality. And the fact is that it was a group of Muslims who attacked the U.S. I added that radicalism has continued to pose a threat to the United States and much of the world. With listeners, pundits, and even some politicians saying National Public Radio made a bad call in firing news analyst Juan Williams, the news organization's ombudsman commented on Thursday night, saying that the firing was poorly handled, but necessary.
"Even though NPR handled this situation badly, the fact remains that NPR must uphold its journalistic standards," Alicia Shepard wrote in a blog post [1].
Williams, a Fox News contributor and 10-year NPR veteran, was fired from the popular public radio syndicate for making comments on "The O'Reilly Factor" about what he describes as his "visceral reaction" to airplane passengers in "Muslim garb." "I get worried. I get nervous," he said.
Shepard, as NPR's ombudsman, is described on her blog as "the public's representative to NPR, serving as an independent source regarding NPR's programming."
It's the second time the news organization has carefully qualified its treatment of Williams in public. NPR CEO Vivian Schiller said Williams' comments should have been "between him and his psychiatrist or his publicist," but later apologized.
"I don't know what their values are now with them attacking me as some kind of crazy person," Williams said on "Fox & Friends" Friday morning. "But I will tell you my values are: I'll tell you the truth if you ask me a question, and I don't care if it fits the left wing position or the right position." He cited his successful writing and reporting career as testament to his credibility. "I've been in tense situations throughout my life," he said. "I am not an erratic person."
Shepard said the "hastily made" announcement triggered a "public relations nightmare" that could have been avoided. "NPR could have waited until his contract ran out, or possibly suspended him pending a review," she writes.

I watched the O'Reilly Factor tonight - and Juan was hosting since Bill was "out on assignment". Juan may have interesting perspectives but he generally is a boring host when he does a guest host spot for O'Reilly.
He was fired up tonight. I just get the feeling after he was shafted like this, that he's going through a bit of an awakening. (And not that he's going to wake up a conservative or anything, but I just get the feeling his eyes have been opened about the "liberal elites")
Billionaire Soros pays for additional NPR reporters Last Updated: 10:45 AM, October 22, 2010 Posted: 10:39 AM, October 22, 2010 Juan Williams may be gone from National Public Radio's lineup of commentators, but billionaire liberal icon George Soros has donated $1.8 million to hire 100 new reporters for 50 of its radio stations, FOXNews.com reported Friday.
The money will go to launch a project called Impact of Government, which Soros' Open Society Foundation says will "bring greater transparency and accountability to the workings of state capitals across the country."
The group, which describes its mission as building "tolerant democracies whose governments are accountable to their citizens," calls it a response to the decline in news coverage of state legislatures.
"A strong democracy requires a diverse, independent, and highly functioning watchdog press to help people hold the government and private sector accountable," Ann Beeson, executive director of U.S. Programs at the Open Society Foundations, said in a statement earlier this week.
Vivian Schiller, NPR president and CEO, said the boost puts the public radio stations in a better position than other news outlets to cover the impact of state government on local communities.
"Our network provides a perfect vehicle for cross-state, cross-region, and national analyses of the most critical issues facing our country," Schiller said in the statement.
Schiller is one of two NPR executives who announced Wednesday that the network was firing national analyst Juan Williams over remarks he made Monday on "The O'Reilly Factor" on Fox News.
In his appearance, Williams said he gets nervous when he flies on airplanes with individuals wearing "Muslim garb." During the segment on jihad and angst toward Muslims in America, Williams also warned against suggesting all Muslims are extremists.
NPR has said it will use the Open Society Foundation donation to solicit applications for "pilot projects" among member stations that will be selected in December and launched in March 2011.

Juan is a liberal who got the shaft from the liberals. This really isn't all about Juan. I see it as trying to take a baseball bat to FOX! That will clearly be a hard sell since it is the NUMBER #1 cable news network out there. Combine that with conservative talk radio, which has a huge audience, and the liberal socialists will have their hands full!
