Boom Boom Brannigan, a pioneer of rock and roll radio in the Capital Region, died Tuesday.

Brannigan, whose real name was Joseph Motto, was among the early disc jockeys during the golden era of AM radio. He worked at WPTR and WABY from 1961 to 1976. He later returned to WPTR but was fired, along with the rest of the staff, in 2004.

Bob Lawson, a longtime radio and television broadcaster, worked with Brannigan at WPTR starting in 1964. It was an era where disc jockeys didn't just play the music.

Terrible news! First Mac and now Boom-Boom. Boom-Boom was the rock and roll king of the party and Bar Mitzvah circuit in the early 70's. Back when there was rock on AM. Back when you actually danced with your girlfriend. Back when the chrome was thick. Back when the final slow song was always The Long and Winding Road by The Beatles.

Boom-Boom was a regular caller to Mayor Jennings Show on Talk 1300 and always had that booming baritone.

Wow you guys scared me for a minute--I thought you said Boomer!

On another note, and many of you are too young to remember this, but WPTR did a Tower of Talent each summer.  My cousins went down to the studio the day Annette Funicello was there.  Annete's mother gave my cousins tickets to the back stage and tickets enough for all of us to go.  I met, Annette, Frankie Avalon, Connie Francis, Fabian, Bobby Rydell, (who asked my cousin out) the Playmates, Conway Twitty and host of others that I can't remember now.  I was only ten.  But being the little kid, everyone was nice to me.  Annette's mother kept in touch with my cousins for a bit. Boom Boom lived me near and we would see him frequently.  He was very cool--even as an old guy.
