BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) -- Seniors prepared to cut back on everything from food to charitable donations to whiskey as word spread Monday that they will have to wait until at least 2012 to see their Social Security checks increase.

The government is expected to announce this week that more than 58 million Social Security recipients will go through a second straight year without an increase in monthly benefits. This year was the first without an increase since automatic adjustments for inflation started in 1975.

"I think it's disgusting," said Paul McNeil, 69, a retired state worker from Warwick, R.I., who said his food and utility costs have gone up, but his income has not. He lamented decisions by lawmakers that he said do not favor seniors.

"They've got this idea that they've got to save money and basically they want to take it out of the people that will give them the least resistance," he said.

Cost-of-living adjustments are automatically set by a measure adopted by Congress in the 1970s that orders raises based on the Consumer Price Index, which measures inflation. If inflation is negative, as in 2009 and 2010, payments remain unchanged.

Still, seniors like McNeil said they'll be thinking about the issue when they go to vote, and experts said the news comes at a bad time for Democrats already facing potentially big losses in November. Seniors are the most loyal of voters, and their support is especially important during midterm elections, when turnout is generally lower.

SS was NOT meant for 'easy living'.....I dont understand where folks come off complaining about their SS not being enough.....when one retires they
'reap what they sow'.......you kids will survive and it really doesn't matter what your kids think of you......trust me...I've seen it....sometimes kids
dont realize who/what their parents are/were until their parents cant talk anymore.....THAT'S A FACT......

The way things are set up by our government you really don't have a choice you just have to pay into it whether you want to or not unless you're self employed.

SS was NOT meant for 'easy living'.....

Ohhhhhhhhhhh yes it was!! That was the big lie!!! That was how the liberal socialists sold it back then. They actually told the sheople that this social security would give them 'enough' money to live on, and that it would be enough to support them in their senior years! BULLSH!T!!!

Now they are bankrupt, just like the government run post office, just like medicare, just like medicaid, just like fannie mae, just like freddie mac and just like the soon to be obamacare!!

The funny thing is that when Social Security was originally put into place, it was a one time payment to help out and it was not supposed to be an endless stream of income for anyone.

The reality is there are seniors hurting.  Strange how billions of dollars was available to help out the banks and auto industry all the while the top folks got million dollar perks from it.  Bet medicare goes up so their SS goes down too.  Go figure.

Which would you cut medications, housing or food? well without meds you won't need a house or will need to eat anymore.  Without food you won't be around to need a house or meds.  Without housing you won't survive long enough to need food to take the meds.

So the solution reach out to the churches, food pantries, try to get meds via a scholarship from the drug companies which they are cutting back on and find a cardboard box.  Nice respect we show our seniors isn't it.

the seniors were lied to when they were 'kids' and never once questioned the whole thing or didn't want to......
so here we are trying to perform CPR on a skeleton, becaust that is really what SS is.......it's not lack of respect....it's what happened and it's what
they also knew would happen when they grew senior.....unless they thought there was a magician to fix it because "It wont happen to me"
