Paladino Loans His Campaign $1 Million
Monday, September 27, 2010, 3:53pm EDT  |  Modified: Monday, September 27, 2010, 4:33pm

Republican Carl Paladino loaned his campaign for governor more than $1 million this month—and he’s also started raising money from Capital Region companies.
But it remains to be seen if more Republican donors will flock to him after Monday’s news that Rick Lazio has dropped out of the governor’s race entirely.
Paladino handily beat Lazio in the primary elections this month to win the Republican Party’s nomination. Until Monday, Lazio had remained on the ballot as the Conservative Party’s nominee.
In total, Paladino—a multimillionaire real estate developer from Buffalo—has given $3.2 million in loans and donations to his campaign. The latest loans were revealed in filings on Sept. 24.
Expect more self-financing to come: Paladino has said he’ll spend $10 million or more on his campaign. He’s estimated his net worth at $150 million, a fortune he built as he became one of western New York’s largest commercial developers.
The cash infusion was needed after Paladino bought $670,000 of TV advertising this month alone. He has $25,000 left in his campaign bank account.
This month, Paladino picked up close to $2,000 in donations from Capital Region companies—among the first donations he’s had from anyone east of Buffalo.
Area donors to Paladino’s campaign include:
• insurance brokers Murray and Zuckerman Inc. ($1,325)
• Frank Gallo & Son Florist ($100)
• Civitello’s Italian Pastry Shoppe Inc. ($50)
