I think many people on this board oppose the idea that a central planner, be it the IDA or Metroplex have to give the nod to every new development that comes along, along with tax breaks, grants, and taxpayer backed low interest loans.  And they give it to millionaires, while the working stiff homeowner gets burdened with the tax bill to pay for the infrastructure and services.  There is no reason that million dollar companies like BBL, Galesi, and the Mallozzi Group should be subsidized in the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars to "develop" in Schenectady County.

I was discussing Hannaford Plaza and Clifton Park Center -- neither of which was built with Metroplex money.  Maybe -- IDA money.  

Also, I know who some of the folks are who hide behind the screen names -- they are ONLY opposed to the money being given to certain folks that aren't in their "political club."   If they were in power -- the millions would be handed out to THEIR preferred group of million dollar companies.  And in some cases, the million dollar companies have "bought and paid for" people from BOTH parties or "political clubs," so no matter who gets elected we are screwed, used and abused anyway.

Colonie Center was losing business to Crossgates and other areas. These shopping areas go through natural cycles. They spent their own money, did a beautiful remodel, made some other changes to attract shoppers. A storekeeper there told me that's $13 million worth of tile in there.
heartburnkid is right, people are scared off from shopping over there. When these shopping areas naturally deteriorate, it is up to those who own them to keep up with the marketplace. If the owners have made the decision that it is note worth it economically to put necessary money into that property, why on earth would taxpayers throw away good money on it? If it is worth it to the owners, then they need to spend their own money. Simple as that.
It is also important for a municipality not to give commercial property owners a free pass when it comes to basic maintenance of a deteriorating structure.
Poor people's money is green, as well. Just because a shopping area is attracting a scuzzier crowd, doesn't mean they aren't making money.
