The town board may have the balls but they could find their collective butts out on the street at the voters earliest convenience.
The fact is .. IF ... what you are saying is true ... that so many people don't want REMS and don't want a tax district ...then you shouldn't be worried about the referendum vote.
I believe that you are worried about the referendum vote because you know that MOST people in Rotterdam have a great respect for REMS and place a high value on the service that they provide ... AND that MOST people think that an extra $15 to $25 a year is a great value when it means saving their life and the lives of their loved ones.

Since the Town Board alone can vote a resolution to set a referendum --- who else do you think could have or should have voted on the resolution ????? Youdesperately need to taka class in civics and learn how town government works.
You need to take classes in politics. This isn't a civics issue.
Tell me, what made the Town Board(this one and previous) believe that the Town residents even WANTS this referendum on a taxing district? What was the motivating factor that promped the board to even create a taxing district to be voted on? This is nothing more than this non-profit leveraging politically to legally access tax money. Promising support to the party that gets this taxing district pushed through. The REMS have no desire to operate without a large contribution to tax dollars. They will never balance their books, they will run like every other tax funded entity, with total disregard for the taxpayer. And as long as they have enough political clout to hang over a politicians head, no politician will ever demand fiscal responsibility.
This shouldn't even be put up for referendum. A real leader would tell them to either get their sh!t together or Mohawk Ambulance will be replacing you as our Town ambulance povider.

You still haven't answered my question:

So, they're getting $120,000 / yr from the town now. IF this tax passes, they're going to get twice as much ($240,000). I thought they weren't operating in the red now? If that's true, what do they need a 100% increase in stipend for?

I have a degree in Political Science .. thank you very much.
The tax district was first proposed by the previous administration --- and you know that is a fact.
Many residents support REMS and support the tax district .. we will see on December 14 if it is a majority or not.
Your statements about REMS not desiring to balance their books or operate without a large contribution of tax dollars ---- are both bold faced lies. IMHO -- You don't want a public referendum because you are afraid that YOUR position is the minority position and that YOUR view will be defeated at the referendum .... so of course you are proposing a Stalinst-type decision .... that is implement YOUR view regardless of what the majority wants.

The Sync Realty issue was resolved by the previous administration - this administration did a 180 on that. So don't give me "since it was proposed during the last administration we are following through", that's BS. This is now the FDG Administration's issue. They will suffer the consequences for the results of the banana republic style referendum.

No I'm afraid the current administration will rig the election by scheduling it at the most inconvenient time and have the ballot at ONE location, and have no absentee ballots. If you put the referendum for a taxing district on the November 2nd ballot, it would get destroyed.

The previous administration was only too happy to throw several dozen familes out on the street in exchange for political contributions from a large neighboring landowner.
When Mr. Del Gallo campaigned for Supervisor -- he promised to let the people decide whether they wanted the tax district or not. Scheduling a public referendum is hardly a bad thing -----

This Administration was only too happy to change zoning and reward an out of state property owner for moving people into his property that was not zoned residential, in exchange for political contributions.
I noticed in the budget that the chief of police gets a decent raise.....good for him!! But does anyone know exactly how many hours he 'works' and what he does?

Rotterdam residents want a referendum on the EMS taxing district about as much as they would want a referendum on a dog park taxing district.
BTW, this isn't a major issue. It's a fabricated issue. The Town paying for a service in which a private company is willing to pay the Town for, just for allowing them to provide the service is stupid.
DVOR, if this is such a major issue, why not make ALL town residents eligible to vote and have the vote on November 2nd?

there are no plans for a "dog park taxing district" --
the ambulance issue is NOT a fabricated one ... it has been around for many years.
Finally, you know very well my position on who should be allowed to vote --- I have stated it a number of times in public at town board meetings .. and a number of times on this website. So don't try to pin the blame on me --- someone who is NOT even a member of the Town Board and had no part in the writing of the ambulance district resolution -- when I have made my position very clear.

That was my point...There should be no plans for a EMS taxing district. It's just as foolish.
You are foolish --- the ambulance tax district is a PUBLIC SAFETY ISSUE ---- the property owners will have a choice .. yes or no .. for the Tax District or against it ... let democracy take its course .. and see what the property owners decide.

OK, a few question that I don't think have been asked as of yet.
If the taxing district is passed, when is the first time that the taxes for this district will be collected? And how much is it that REMS would get with the first years tax collection?
Is this enough to pay for 4 ambulances??? 1??? If it isn't enough, then shouldn't the tax be raised?
If it's more than enough for 1 (or all 4), then what will be done with the rest of the money?
If there is a new ambulance, then how will this affect that ambulance squad? Will it reduce costs? If so, then maybe this would be a 1 time tax?
If so, then instead of having a tax, why not have them collect at the corners like the fire departments do at times, and THEY already HAVE a taxing district... maybe because they believe the people should have a choice if they're going to support by rolling down their windows, or by mailing a check, since District 2 has said to watch your mail for their yearly fundraiser? Maybe they hurt themselves in that they can't collect donations, since they went to taking paychecks?
