Frequent shootings get a bit unnerving MARV CERMAK COVERING SCHENECTADY Published: 12:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 21, 2010
I've seen a lot of crazy crime during a lifetime in the Capital Region but nothing even close to the Schenectady street warfare that has taken place in the last two months.
Back in July, in the Central State Street neighborhood, gunmen in a vehicle shot at pedestrians, who pulled guns from their waistbands and returned the fire.
Two days later, in the same neighborhood, people in passing vehicles exchanged gunfire. I spoke with several veteran cops and residents who agreed they had never heard of such reckless violence in this area.
Just when that seemed to be the height of outrage, I came within minutes of witnessing the brazen street shooting in the downtown heart at 12:50 a.m. Friday.
On almost the doorstep of venerable Proctors and popular newcomer Bombers Burrito Bar, imagine this: A guy grabbing a shotgun out of a car and shooting a man in the thigh just minutes after they had an argument.
And 38 hours later, in residential midtown, an 18-year-old man is blown away in another shotgun attack. I can't help wondering what's next?
A seasoned investigator reminded me how battles originally were settled with fists and later oftentimes with knives. Then, combatants switched to handguns and now the use of street sweepers, the term cops use for shotguns.
What's really unnerving is the bold indifference of gunmen spraying gunfire in broad daylight, a flagrant brazen act that ups the chances that innocent souls will be hit by crossfire. Unfortunately, there have been no arrests in the four incidents so these gunslingers may strike again.
Being able to get away with gunplay can't help but encourage other wannabes. Three state troopers have been patrolling with city cops on one shift five days a week for months, but clearly that is not enough help.
SCHENECTADY Police statistics say downtown is safe BY MICHAEL LAMENDOLA Gazette Reporter
The aftershock of last week’s shotgun shooting of a Schenectady man on State Street appears to have rolled through the city’s centerpiece thoroughfare with little impact. A sampling of people interviewed Thursday night, a week to the day since the crime, said they knew about the shooting, which left a man wounded in the thigh, but still believed downtown safe enough to visit. Police have not released the name or condition of the victim. Dan Kennedy of Rotterdam stood Thursday outside Bombers Burrito Bar on State Street, across the street from where the man was shot, smoking a cigarette and enjoying the warm night. He was at Bombers to celebrate the birthday of a friend. “I heard about the shooting,” he said. “I wasn’t worried about it.” Kennedy said he has no fear coming downtown, calling the shooting an isolated incident. Tom Iadicicco of Schenectady also felt safe enough to visit Bombers at night with his girlfriend. “I came out to dinner and will stay downtown for an open house at Northeastern Fine Jewelry,” he said. Iadicicco, who works downtown during the day, also said he sees a bit of damage control taking place among authorities about the shooting. “They want to keep that perfect image that it is safe and familyoriented,” he said. ...................>>>>.................>>>>>.................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01103&AppName=1
Yeah, Downtown being safe in comparison to the City of Schenectady, is like the Green Zone being safe in comparison to the City of Bagdad. The rest of the City's a war zone, but a one block is considered "safe", in comparison of course.
"Familyoriented!" {sic} The Gazetto has coined a new word for a shooting gallery, filled with aggressive pan handlers where you can't buy anything but an overpriced watery martini. Any moron that takes a family Downtown should be investigated by DSS.
Instead of finally calling for a gang crackdown and a clean out of City Hall the pathetic People's Gazetto does yet another idiotic puff piece. Then they wonder why no one buys this rag. How about calling for a City wide gang crackdown led by the Sheriff's Dept since Mayor SOS and the council rubber stamps can't do anything?
you trolls needs to stop drinking your homemade cool aid -- even when confronted with the facts -- that there is no crime downtown -- you go off into la-la land of your own unreality..

I guess not everyone views schenectady county like you do bananas.
If you work for the gazette, are a member of the dem party, a recipient and supporter of metroplex taypaid handouts or a frequent visitor to the dss building on broadway, a drug dealer or an illegal gun toter, then people wouldn't have expected anything less from you.
The socialist system must be working well for you....perhaps?

A week later, MANY cameras watching downtown, people all around (remember, it's a revitalized area, teeming with activity) - any arrests yet?
What arrests? Keep repeating, "There is no crime Downtown"! Shotgun shooting, rape, stabbing but no serious crime.
BTW-Congrats to admin and the whole staff. NEW RECORD VIEWS for this site and the month is not even over. But of course, nobody reads it. Just the press, every politician and people most likely to vote. Nobody reads the People's Gazetto and fewer advertise in it.
There was no crime in Albany either until one of the Congress was mugged leaving the bar on Elk St then the area was rid of crime in a couple of weeks. It only counts when politicians are involved.
If the reps were in control of city/county government............the dems and the gazette would be SCREAMING about the violence/murders/crime/drugs in schenectady county!!
IT WOULD BE FRONT PAGE HEADLINES EVERY SINGLE DAY!!

A week ago today, a man leaving Bombers Burrito Bar was shot in the leg with a shotgun. A WEEK!!! And still, no suspect named, no arrest. A week ago tomorrow a 17 year old boy was shot dead in broad daylight WITH A SHOTGUN, no suspects named, no arrest. We have people with loaded shotguns STILL driving around Schenectady(and hunting season isn't open)and you want me to believe everything is hunky-dory in Schenectady. There have been 25 shootings this year through August. In a City the size of Schenectady, seems like quite a lot.
