I'll tell ya, I've taken the bus from time to time (parking in Albany sucks) But whether parking or my car in for routine servicing, son needed use of a car, and I remember a few times having to catch that bus that goes up Guilderland Ave to get to the vet and meet my wife, I'd be looking at my watch wondering if the bus was going to make it downtown in time (the Rt 5 bus). I'd be looking at my watch when we get stuck behind a school bus. Now, what was able to be done, and bus drivers would do it, soon as the school bus red lights were shut off, the CDTA bus driver would get in the left hand lane of the two lanes, and could get passed the school bus. Those kids, you know, walk two blocks so the school bus stops at every corner, and sometimes in between, every street off State St. We used to walk to and from school. But hey, I don't think I'd want my kid walking around those streets off State st, not now that the city and county give all the focus to downtown and not the neighborhoods. Too dangerous for kids to walk.
But anyway, before they narrowed State St, any cars "behind" the school bus but in the left lane while the school bus traveled the right lane, those cars could pass the school bus when the lights on the school bus weren't red.
Now figure this. if you get behind a school bus somewhere in Woodlawn, then you will have to stop every time the school bus stops and there is no lane to allow you to pass when the lights on the bus are off.
So, hey. DVOR, tell us, how much gas will be wasted by all the stop and go, stop and go, stop and go, stopping at every corner along Rt 5 from Woodlawn all the way to downtown when you get stuck behind a school bus? What is so good and so necessary?
Now, imagine this. You wind up behind a bus while in Woodlawn. You are the 30th car behind the bus. When the bus finally reachs Nott Terrace, you may be the 40th car behind the bus, because once you get stuck at a traffic light, cars come out of the side street and put more distance between you and the bus. So, the light changes, you can proceeed but now you have to stop because those 3 cars that came out of a side street got "in front" of you, but you still have the stop and go, stop and go, because of the school buses.
Traffic calming? Trying to get people to walk? Would YOU walk along State st? And besides, people walk on the existing sidewalks and there are designated crosswalks.
By the way, DVOR, you talk about Mt P and Bellevue as your concerns. What about Hill and Vale? Oh, and State st above Brandywine, they had a few shootings there just over the summer, during daylight.
Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent. Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.

This is the same crap they pulled on Lower State. It's called "traffic calming". They want you to walk, bike or use the horrible CDTA buses (which is also in free fall). Mayor SOS wants to permanently remove customers and slow traffic to a crawl. Now traffic is backed for blocks. People are furious over these "improvements". Stop narrowing major roads.
Marv Cermak has a great story about how mad business owners are. The few that are left. The blame goes to the Mayor and rubber stamp all DEM City Council who actually want to do the same thing on Erie Blvd. The same failed, stunad plans over and over.
and yet the State DOT had to come up with the plan and approve it -- I have been on the newly paved section of upper State -- so far no problems. I do agree that the downtown was poorly done -- but that project was started during the waning days of Mayor Al -- so he gets that blame.
