I'm sure someone would be 'selected' to fill the position temporarily.....THEN.....run for the position. So where is the savings by offering an early retirement? |

I haven't seen the list of those being offered the incentive. There has been speculation but no official list has been publicized. Personally, I think it would be a great idea .. retire the current highway superintendent .. get a Democrat in the position -- hopefully one who would work to phase out the department by merging it with the county highway department. |

So there ya have it taxpayers in rotterdam!!!! You will be paying TWICE!!! They are not 'eliminating jobs' at all!!! It's just the dirty rotten politics that rotterdam is famous for. Patronage 'early retirements' that will cost the taxpayers a bundle....AND....immediately fill the position with someone of their choosing, in their own party with a hefty salary and benefit package!!!!!!!!!!!! SUE THE TOWN!!!! CALL THE SPOTLIGHT!!!!! |

WHY does it need to be a Democrat? Don't be a foot soldier, DVOR. We have enough of those already in Rotterdam. Be an advocate for the residents and support the hiring of someone who will do the right thing. |

DVR has already shown his colors! What you see is what you get. Remember who's running this show in the town of rotterdam. |

As the Highway Superintendent is an elected position .. the state law would not allow abolishing the position until the end of the current term of office. So even if the Highway Supt were to retire .. someone would have to be appointed to fill the remainder of the term. Then there is the matter of how many days before the election to the next term - the action to abolish an elected position has to happen a certain number of days BEFORE the scheduled election .. and off the top of my head I forget whether it is like 3 months or 6 months ... so the "window of opportunity" to pass the local legislation to abolish the position would be like from now through early March 2011 but couldn't take effect until Jan 1 2012 --- and there may be one other hitch .. abolishing the Supt of Highways may require BOTH a Town Board action AND a referendum vote by the voters of the town.
that should be a cake walk once a new town board member is seated |

We've had a Republican in that office for some time .. now we need someone in that office who will work WITH the rest of the town administration to reduce costs and increase the effectiveness of that department -- and that IS being an advocate for the residents .. finally getting someone in that office who will do the right thing for the residents. |

I've felt that way about Republicans, too. But I occasionally find a Republican worth supporting and voting for. I off a shout out to fellow Siena grad - Chris Gibson who is running for the House in the neighboring congressional district. I wish him success in his campaign. |

I have voted for a number of Democrats over the years but when the Democrats allow a small group of left wing radicals to hijack their whole party and force them to vote for issues which they know their constituents are against it just shows how little they really care about the people who voted them into office and therefore don't deserve anyone's vote. |

I have never voted for the "left wing radicals" within the Democratic Party - that explains my Presidential votes in 2000, 2004, and 2008. Above the town and county level - I prefer to support the more moderate candidates for public office. At the town and county level, I support the candidates that I know personally and who I believe will perform the duties of the office for which they are running for. Just having a D after their names is not always enough for me. |
