SCHENECTADY Arthur’s Market closes; property is up for sale Cost of running business too much for owners BY MICHAEL GOOT Gazette Reporter Reach Gazette reporter Michael Goot at 395-3105 or mgoot@dailygazette.net.
Arthur’s Market, the popular hangout for Stockade residents, has closed. “We’re done,” Joyce Wachala said outside the store at the corner of North Ferry and Front streets on Wednesday evening. “The economy is hard for everybody. I guess we’re just another casualty of it.” The business, which Wachala and her husband Artur had owned since 2007, had been open for erratic hours for at least a month. The couple posted a notice on the Historic Stockade Yahoo group on Wednesday saying it was closed indefi nitely. Wachala said it was too expensive to keep the business open between food, taxes, insurance and licenses on top of the mortgage. “You’ve got to put a lot of money into a store to have it run. I don’t think anybody right now has a lot of extra money,” she said. The owners have had the property on the market with Realty USA and are seeking somebody to perhaps rent or lease the space and continue the business. She was keeping her options open. “Maybe we’ll open in another few months. We’ll see how it goes.” The Wachalas do plan to be open for special events in September such as the Stockade Villagers Arts Show and the Stockade Walkabout. .................>>>>.....................>>>>.....................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01601&AppName=1
The Stockade area is slowly drifting in a bad direction. It is time for City Hall to address the neighborhoods .. the Downtown will benefit from strong neighborhoods .. and strong suburban towns.

A tremendous loss for the Stockade and the entire City. Arthur's Market is the oldest business in town which closed 3 months ago. Finally the Gazetto found out? The crushing City/County burden has taken another victim. It was smarter to close than to dump more money into it. They same thing is happening in every single City Business District. Take another look at Crane without Marcella's, Eastern or Broadway, if you have excellent shocks.
City Hall can't address anything-everything they get involved in collapses. Let City Hall address Stratton's $13 million deficit then maybe they can reopen Tiny Tot Land.

But hey at least 2 blocks of downtown are looking better!!
And YES....the business are hurting downtown no matter what they say! And the gin mills do good when college is in session!!!! And the eateries do good when proctors has a successful show!

"Looking better" is the operative phrase. A facade with no jobs in the back. Along with the armed robbery at Cornell's, home invasion on Parkwood, 2 shops on Jay St were broken into. Complete free fall and no one utters the words "gang related".
BUT WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A government subsidized windfall of GE battery jobs......oh my....and this following a 9 week furlough of which I hear rumbles of a strike for some lazy a** workers having to 'perform'(wonder if there's viagra for this)outside their dark dark box.....if only the market could hang on and on and on and on and on.......Atlas Shrugged-------AGAIN YOU DAMN NITWITS.......

Let's see if the daily rag can actually do their job and actually and factually 'inform' the people.
Perhaps they could factually report on exactly how many homes are vacant in the city. Ya know, the ones that still have curtains in the window, but empty inside? The ones where people just walked away because they couldn't afford the taxes any longer.
How about factually informing the people on exactly how many buildings have absent landlords, listing their names.
How about factually informing the people on exactly how many people are on public assistance.
How about factually informing the people on the updated census regarding the average income.
How about factually informing the people on how many city/county/plex employees are driving around in taxpaid vehicles.
How about factually informing the people on what businesses are getting some form of tax breaks.
Nah.....that would take real journalism.

Bravo BT! If people knew how many properties are off the tax rolls due to nonprofit status and how many others had reductions they would storm City Hall. If everyone paid their taxes they could be reduced 25% across the board. Sickening how many mansions in the best neighborhood are tax free because of Union College.
As far as this "story" this reporter is on the education beat. Joyce is a well known supporter of neighborhood schools and against the wastefulness of the past administration. He was probably calling on another matter. When Joyce had to resign due to family illness the Schenectady Schools were set back another 10 years. Some people are irreplaceable.
