OK .. I have been hearing that some people want a Dog Park in Rotterdam.  Frankly, I don't have a dog or an opinion on the subject.
So I am just asking,  what do you think of the idea?  Is there a need for it?

I agree with MT above.  We don't even have any good "PEOPLE" Parks.

Let people walk their dogs around their homes or take them to the bike path and bring a bag with them to pick up the dogs deposits.

Dog Parks - it's the new vogue trend.  Just another way to reduce the supply of land to keep town property values high.  Move to Guilderland if you want a dog park.

Quoted from CICERO
Move to Guilderland if you want a dog park.

It has been suggested that we use a portion of an existing park for this new Dog Park ..  I have been told that it does not require special equipment - except for fencing.

If it involves one penny of taxpayer $ - I vote no.
Fence takes $

It would be a very expensive chain link fence as a cheap fence would be destroyed by vandals.

stupid idea......how about "mutt mitt stations" in the already existing parks for those inclined to actually pick up after their furry friends.....or.....
do it in your yard/neighborhood.......

The dog park would be a great idea....especially for those dog owners who are too lazy to go for walks, or, who let their pets deposit wherever they want to (without any pickups) ....it may prevent dogs from being let out to roam Rotterdam......AND.....the owners would pay a fee to defray any costs....AND....look for space that would allow this to happen....not plunk it anywhere....        ..
Open up Rotterdam....tunnel vision is not very complimentary.

I agree with the above.  We don't really have the space or the money for it.  Of course, if the Town Supervisor would like to step up like he did with the Senior Center and give his services for no fee, or when he promised that he will do the same for the little league, if there's no cost for the taxpayers, it may actually increase something in value.  Personally, I would not like to own a home near said park.  What would happen if someone's dog escapes from the park?  Or before they're in the park, the dog jumps out of the car and runs off before the owner gets hold of the leash?  Who would be held responsible for the damage the dog does, whether it be digging up someone's petunias or attacking a resident?  What about the neighbors who don't want to hear the yapping of dogs all through the day?  Will we have cops going past the park to make sure the dogs are brought home at closing time?

I understand your reasoning to some extent, SoToSpeak, but answer this for me, if you're too lazy to take your dog out for a walk around your neighborhood, what's going to give you the energy to take your dog and walk to this park, or better yet, load the dog into a carrier and drive to the park, and then will you no longer have to worry about caring for the dog in the park?  What happens when someone's dog gets aggressive IN the park and attacks some other dog or person?    The owners would pay a fee?  You mean like the oppressive taxes we already pay?
