Top markets lost 3.5M manufacturing jobs in decade

America’s 100 largest labor markets -- including Albany -- have lost nearly 3.5 million manufacturing jobs in the past 10 years, according to a Business First analysis of newly released federal data. Business First is a sister publication of The Business Review.

The top 100 markets had 6,686,400 manufacturing jobs as of June 2010, down from 10,184,600 in the same month of 2000. That means 3,498,200 manufacturing positions disappeared during the decade, a decline of 34.3 percent.

The Albany, New York, area lost 8,500 manufacturing jobs during the same 10-year span.

Only one market added manufacturing jobs during the decade -- Bakersfield, Calif., with a gain of 1,900 positions.

The biggest loss in raw terms occurred in the Los Angeles market, where 310,000 manufacturing jobs slipped away in 10 years.
