Tuesday, July 6, 2010, 12:40pm EDT Cuomo sues Glenville landlord for discrimination The Business Review (Albany)
Attorney General Andrew Cuomo filed lawsuits today against two owners and managers of residential housing complexes, alleging they refused to rent to black applicants.
The complexes are in Glenville and Brooklyn. Cuomo said the Glenville housing complex, known as Shady Lane Apartments at 133 Saratoga Road, also refused to rent to families with children, Cuomo said. Shady Lane is owned by Socha Management Inc.
A call to Socha Management was not immediately returned.
Cuomo said the owners violated federal and state housing and civil rights laws. The lawsuits were filed following an undercover investigation. According to the attorney general, several applicants were told there were no apartments available, when there were apartments available; black applicants were told to make appointments and fill out the applications before viewing apartments, while white applicants were able to view apartments immediately. Black applicants also were discouraged from applying for apartments by being told that pending applications would prevent their applications from being considered, Cuomo said.
I always thought that Shady Lane apts were for seniors.....senior housing......no?
