avon - where does scotia fit in the town of glenville #???
and
how come we can't repeal a tax - something that would redirect money in the community
if i didnt pay the county X as part of my car purchase i would most likely spend x in local business
thus no automobile sales tax could be a positive for housing prices based on demand increase local foot traffic which would be positive for small business
govt would still get sales tax money just thru a different stream |

Scotia is a village .. property owners in Scotia pay BOTH village and town taxes. |

When will the Pilot deal for Recovery Room/BBL be announced DVOR? You don't honestly think they are going to make them pay the taxes that everyone else pays |

I was responding to your criticism of efforts at economic development .. economic develop which WILL expand our tax base ... we need to do BOTH .. cut spending and expand the tax base.
DVR, are you referring to my comments on convenience stores, gas stations, and pizza parlors? Or are you referring to the fact that I criticized development since over the decades it has shown no benefit in Rotterdam? Anyways, it seems as though you agree that cutting spending is key to the equation working. And I assume you agree that expanding economic development without rolling back Town, School, and County budgets is nothing but a continued death spiral. I don't believe you disagree that rolling back budgets and cutting spending has an immediate direct impact which relieves the need to provide the "giveaways" Rotterdam is so famous for! |

So in essence, what you are saying is that if you repeal the auto sales tax, that leaves more money in people's pocket. They spend that money on durable goods generating sales tax through a different revenue scheme. Concept works except you are now collecting tax on about $1,600 - $2,000 dollars of auto sales tax. This is a dramatic reduction in total sales revenue (about 92%) and would likely not be well received by politicians. But let's keep thinking of ways to put money back in people's pockets. |

We need to think of ways to cut spending and pass the info on to the power that be. |

The town can't repeal the auto sales tax .. that is a County and State issue. |

You are saying that development has no benefit for our town? If so, you are misguided. I do believe that we can expand the tax base through new development AND cut spending AND lower taxes. |

I think everybody agrees that development is necessary. The point of contention is, having a central planner use tax dollars to subsidize a preferred developer to build in your town, rather than lower taxes to incentivize ALL developers to WANT to build in your town. We should be attracting business, not bribing business. |

"bribe" implies that the incentive was illegal -- it was all perfectly legal |

Politicians are just legalized gangsters. Remember what Lincoln said when he asked "how many legs a dog has if you call the tail a leg". It’s political word games DVOR. Call it whatever is least offensive to the people’s ears. Subsidize, Incentivize, Grants, Stimulus. At the end of the day, it's taking taxpayer money from the many and transferring it into the hands of the select few. Selected by the party in control. So yes, legal theft under the guise of "economic development". |

DVR, I'm not going to get into a pi$$ing match with you. I never said development wasn't important or necessary, you consistently miss the point that if you do not control spending you can develop forever with no net benefit. We have seen this with all the PILOT projects. The sum of all the assessed value added to the Town from these projects did not lower residents tax burden for Town or School. This is because the Town, Schools and County raised their budgets ultimately nullifying the alledged benefits. You indicate I am misguided yet you yourself have offered proposals to cut spending ie combine the Clerk and Receiver of Taxes offices, and others. Basically I have agreed with you on this issue, but feel stronger about it because cuts definitely will help taxpayers where all your "projects" have proven not to. This is all in light of about a 25% general fund and highway tax increase being looked at by the Board for the 2011 Budget. |
