The rapidly growing Recovery Sports Grill chain of restaurants is looking to add a location in Rotterdam.

The restaurant would be built at the former Capitol Plaza (now an eyesore) at Altamont Avenue and Curry Road, as part of a $4.5 million project that would include a bank branch. The project was announced today by the Schenectady Metroplex Development Authority.

Recovery is also planning a location along Wolf Road in Colonie (scheduled to open in August), and has existing restaurants in Troy, Albany, Amsterdam and elsewhere. The chain is owned by Albany’s BBL Construction Services.

The project still needs planning board approval. The restaurant expects to open late this year.

The Recovery Sports Grill has awesome "Margarita Wing's"! (Mild Wings w/honey, lime, cilantro served with a lime wedge)

If you aren't a fan of 'hot wings' these wings are for you!

Who did the marketing research? Is there a customer demand for such a business? Don't get me wrong. I would like to see something substantial at that location. I just don't want our tax dollars being spent on a 'build it and they will come' dream!

And did these business people actually come to rotterdam all on their in their searches or did the plex 'beg' them to set up here by using a tax paid sweetheart deal?

And why is Susan Savage taking credit for this? She has been all over local talk radio taking credit for this possible new business? Didn't our IDA board have anything to do with it? Or did our IDA sell their soul to the plex when they signed that contract? And where is FDG, ROTTERDAM'S SUPERVISOR, on this matter?

And who's going to pick up the tab for the water disaster that lies under this building? And another question.....if it is such a great location, why didn't walgreen continue with their plans? hmmmmm.......

FDG probably just heard about it today. Along with everyone else, in the TU.

IDA? hehe - ya, ok.

Probably wasn't supposed to be "leaked" yet - someone might have jumped the gun, according to what I'm hearing.

Oh, and yes - the details of the 'plex participation are forthcoming.

Schenectady County Announces Former Capitol Plaza in Rotterdam to be Development Site
BBL Plans $4.5 Million Investment – New Recovery Sports Grill Planned

(Schenectady, N.Y.)   Schenectady County officials today announced that Columbia Development and BBL Hospitality will invest more than $4.5 million to bring its successful Recovery Sports Grill to the former Capitol Plaza in Rotterdam.
“Jobs and economic growth continue to be our focus in Schenectady County,” said Susan E. Savage, Chairwoman of the Schenectady County Legislature.  “The redevelopment of Capitol Plaza will fix an area of Rotterdam that is now vacant and in poor condition and replace it with a terrific new venue.”
At the former Capitol Plaza site,  Columbia and BBL Construction Services will demolish the existing structure, grade the site, build the Recovery Sports Grill -- a sports-themed restaurant with more than 50 large screen televisions and a large assortment of sports memorabilia including items that connect with Rotterdam and Schenectady’s sports history.  Columbia also plans to construct a second building on the site for another tenant once it completes lease negotiations, which are currently underway.
Mr. Kenneth Waldie, Director of Food and Beverage for BBL Hospitality said,
"Rotterdam and Schenectady County were selected for our next Recovery Sports Grill because the community reflects the attributes we look for in our sites -- namely, a close knit community with a tremendous pride and passion for their local and regional sports. The Recovery Sports Grill is a casual dining experience heavily themed with a celebration of local sports. Rotterdam possesses a rich history of sports success and iconic sports personalities that we are sure is going to make this restaurant a great place to come to eat, meet friends, and of course cheer on all your favorite teams. Our motto is "every game, every day".  We would like to thank the leadership and vision of Metroplex, the Rotterdam IDA, the Town of Rotterdam, and Schenectady County in guiding us through a challenging set of redevelopment efforts to make this all possible."
Rotterdam Town Supervisor Fran Del Gallo, said, “This project will help dramatically improve one of the key entry ways to the Town of Rotterdam.  Attracting the Recovery Sports Grill will certainly lead other retailers to take a close look at Rotterdam.”
BBL Hospitality has constructed 40 hotels with over 2 million square feet of space. The firm owns and operates 14 hotels and 7 Recovery Grills.  Other Recovery Grill locations include: Albany; Troy; Amsterdam; Verona and Colonie, NY as well as Westhampton, New Jersey and Norfolk, Virginia.
BBL Construction Services is one of the largest construction companies in the United States while its development arm Columbia Development is one of the largest owners and developers of commercial properties in Upstate New York.
Robert Mallozzi, Chairman of the Rotterdam IDA said, “Since taking over the Rotterdam IDA this year, we decided to focus on a few specific goals and get these important projects done for the Town of Rotterdam.  Capitol Plaza was number one on that list. We are so excited to have an organization like Columbia Development and BBL with its fantastic track record of success work with us to transform this site.”
Ray Gillen, Commissioner of Economic Development for Schenectady County and Chair of Metroplex said, “Replacing the current Capitol Plaza with an exciting new use is a fantastic opportunity for the County’s economic development team working closely with the Town of Rotterdam.  We are very grateful to BBL for their commitment to our community.”
Metroplex will provide a $65,000 grant toward the cost of demolition. The Rotterdam IDA will provide a grant of $60,000 toward the cost of site work and demolition.
Construction will begin after Town approvals are granted. The Town Planning Board will hold a special meeting tonight to get the project review started.

Recovery Sports Bar
There's a new $4.5 million economic development plan for the city of Rotterdam.

Chairwoman of the Schenectady County Legislature Susan Savage, along with Rotterdam city officials announced the development of The Recovery Sports Bar.

The project will include taking down the Capital Plaza on the corner of Altamont Avenue and Curry Road and building the 6,200 square foot restaurant.

Columbia Development along with BBL Construction and BBL Hospitality will help build the restaurant.

“This site is certainly one of the most visible in the town of Rotterdam,” said Mark Goldstein, Director of Real Estate for Columbia Development.

Goldstein says his company jumped at the opportunity for the project.

“Today’s tenants need to move more quickly then in the past,” said Goldstein. “Because everything happens right now in this world. In order to take advantage of today’s market, today’s prices and today’s financial opportunities. You can’t take two years to plan things out.”

Savage feels the new construction is good news for the city.

“This project is important because it creates jobs, it creates sales tax, it will create momentum in an exciting new venue,” said Savage. “It will clean up this site and make it a corner that Rotterdam and all of Schenectady County can be proud of one again.”

Savage believes the new restaurant will help attract other businesses to the area.

“Our focus in Schenectady County continues to be new jobs, new investments for our community and as mush as upstate New York and the rest of the country has been reared in recession, we gather here in Schenectady County almost every week to mark another new multi-million dollar investment.”

The new restaurant will employ about 30 people.

A town board meeting is set for Tuesday night on further details on the construction. There are Recovery Bar locations in Albany and Troy.

Metrograft is putting up another gin mill! Thank you new County redevelopment team. This is what we needed in town. We are tired of nongovernmental wings. Wasn't there a bar in Newest Lunch for years?

This should be a big plus for SS for State Senate. Don't say she never helped Rotterdam. Forget about Golub Corp, exploding County taxes/fees and go tie one on.
