Government in Schenectady neither by or for the people
It is time to take back our city government! We must demand integrity and responsibility from our council members and mayor. Let’s examine recent mistakes by local leaders. 1) Both the council and mayor have done nothing to end the needless demolition of our dwindling historic sites, exemplifi ed by the loss of the Silver Diner, eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. 2) Public input on the latest selection to fill a vacant council seat was not allowed. 3) Meeting schedules were changed to only one committee meeting and one public meeting for the months of July and August. Council President Gary McCarthy claims council members will investigate delinquent properties, but does not say how they will do so. Will they actually go to the sites and make inspections or merely review reports from the comfort of an armchair? Such investigations should be under the direction of the mayor, and if there is dissatisfaction with inspectors’ performance, he should make necessary changes. McCarthy’s move appears nothing more than a way to eliminate public input. 4) The purposeful destruction of public access TV in Schenectady. Public access does not demand quality of programming over allowing all members of the public to have free access to its services. McCarthy’s spearheading of the Schenectady Access Cable Council transfer to Proctors obviously meant censorship and discrimination, and now public access has become a shadow of its once-illustrious self. Regarding SACC-TV, a few — myself included — saw the danger of the transfer to Proctors. It put McCarthy and Proctors CEO Philip Morris in control of programming and opened the door to elimination of “Schenectady Today” and other shows not considered appropriate. McCarthy and his cronies have made it clear they want only “positive” comments made at public meetings, yet he makes sarcastic remarks about certain speakers and even sends text messages during their precious and now-dwindling moments at the microphone. He appears to have his own personal agenda to silence the public, and no one on the council has the courage to speak against his actions. We’ve heard it, and said it, before, but it’s time to demand new blood and fresh faces in our local government — and to also demand term limits. Remember, the mayor and council work for us; no other employer would accept such inept and dangerous performance from its employees.
Keeping voting for the Krat machine. And yes we need term limits.
Ms, DeLain didn't even go into the disgrace of Mercury Morris' City Council broadcasts. Color patterns, old tape, parades anything but the criticism being leveled at the pathetic rubber stamps. The community must now take Channel 16 back from this idiot. The old SACC board is rightfully keeping the proceeds of the sale of the old studio. They should buy a new home and get Proctor's/The Machine/Mercury Morris out of the television business. Hopefully, the catering hall and Channel 16 money grab will awaken the sleeping sheeple.

A few of us are awake and we need to get together and unite.
Welcome to the land of the Democrat and don't expect anything to change until they're voted out of office.
We had a chance to get Vince Riggi in a few years back! Too bad we can't get him to run again....He would be a GREAT candidate for the republican party. Unfortunately, he did not have alot of support. The GOP City committee is not to agggressive and needs to be revived. There are some strong oldies but we need to infiltrate the party with some new young blood.
"not aggressive"-it's not functioning. When was the last City GOP meeting?
Vince Riggi should be the next Mayor. He has been right time after time about new fees, new taxes and City Hall indifference. What's missing is any support. Look for the DEMS to unplug City Council coverage {with their buddy Morris) to stop the mounting criticism.
Take the city back from 'who'? There is a huge long list. The beneficiaries of the liberal socialist dictators, is the majority of the electorate. From the welfare recipients to the 'selected few contractors'. The socialists dictators have a huge wall not only protecting them, but supplying their campaign contributions. They clearly are not going to bite the hand that feeds them!

The metroplex is the biggest problem facing the people in schenectady. They, along with the city leaders, have been spending taxpayer's money that the taxpayer's don't have. With job losses, no raises, low wages, increased taxes and benefits, this so called 'boom' is artificial. It is based only on an increase in supply of (taxpayer's) money........NOT ON CONSUMER DEMAND!!!
The plex and it's city leaders have to 'beg' and offer 'sweetheart deals', to get anyone to even think of setting up home here. They will even entice the 'risky' such as stephen waite. They are clearly no different than Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae! It will bust eventually and the taxpayers will be forced to continue to bail them out so they can survive and continue to produce nothing!
consumer demand should be driving the economy....not our tax dollars and not the government programs. We can spend all of the money we want...but it is consumer demand that REALLY drives and builds the economy!

Off and on at Schenectady City Council meetings, community activists complain about funds poured into downtown redevelopment while neglected neighborhoods are collapsing.
The Rev. Van Stuart put it this way: "If we don't help the neighborhoods a mile or so from downtown, ultimately there will be no downtown."
Stuart, who works for the Schenectady Inner City Ministry, is also concerned about the lack of citizen interest in council meetings.
"It's the same cast of characters who show up here every two weeks," Stuart said. "Does this mean the rest of the city's residents don't have any opinion about how the city operates?"
Vince Riggi and Harry Brand, among the regulars Stuart referred too, also spoke that night both about pedestrians walking in the streets. It's worth noting this situation is a problem in most urban areas, not just Schenectady.
Riggi said he's tired of seeing kids walking down the middle of streets blocking traffic. "Mothers pushing strollers on streets should be arrested for child endangerment," Riggi said.
Brand agreed. "There are more people walking on the roads than there are walking on sidewalks where they belong," Brand said. He's also upset over loud motorcycles. "Some cycle noise is enough to blast your head off," he said..............>>>>...................>>>>...................Read more: http://www.timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp?storyID=945873&category=MCERMAK#ixzz0sEksvkb0
