Republicans Capture House Seat in Obama's Hometown

Republican Charles Djou won the special election to gain House seat for GOP in Obama's hometown.

HONOLULU  -- Republicans scored a midterm election victory Saturday when Honolulu City Councilman Charles Djou won a Democratic-held House seat in Hawaii in the district where President Obama grew up -- the latest triumph for the GOP as it looks to take back control of Congress.

Djou's victory was a blow to Obama and other Democrats who could not rally around a candidate and find away to win a congressional race that should have been a cakewalk. The seat had been held by a Democrat for nearly 20 years and is located in the district where Obama was born and spent most of his childhood.

"This is a momentous day. We have sent a message to the United States Congress. We have sent a message to the national Democrats. We have sent a message to the machine," Djou said. "The congressional seat is not owned by one political party. This congressional seat is owned by the people."

Djou received 67,274 votes, or 39.5 percent. He was trailed by state Senate President Colleen Hanabusa, a Democrat who received 52,445 votes, or 30.8 percent. The other leading Democrat, former U.S. Rep. Ed Case, received 47,012 votes, or 27.6 percent.

Republicans see the victory as a powerful statement about their momentum heading into November. They already sent a Republican to the U.S. Senate to replace the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts -- a place that was once thought to be the most hostile of territories for the GOP. Now Republicans can say they won a congressional seat in the former backyard of the president and in a state that gave Obama 72 percent of the vote two years ago.

"Charles' victory is evidence his conservative message of lowering the tax burden, job creation and government accountability knows no party lines. It is a message Americans want to hear from candidates across the country," said Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele.

But Democrats believe the success in Hawaii will be short-lived. Djou will only serve through the remainder of 2010, and another election will be held in November for the next term. Democrats are confident they can topple Djou in November because the vote won't be split among several candidates, as it was Saturday............>>>>...................>>>>.........................http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/05/21/republicans-seek-capture-house-seat-obamas-backyard/

Wouldn't read too much into this. DEMS will be united in November and it will go back into their column.

I just checked the Cnn and Msnbc websites and their stories are the same as FOX.

The  reps won on default because the dems have an inner party fight going on.

If the dems can pull it together before Nov....the reps will lose the seat.

I don't know how you can spin that!

I'm not debating the facts, but linking ultra-conservative fox news makes everything you read there very biased.

I've noticed a slight change in cnn of late. That 'candy whatever her name is' is reporting/leaning a little more to the right these days.

As far as the Hawaii election....ALL media outlets reported the same story.

As far as FOX news, people may say they lean to the right, but ALL of the other media outlets lean WAY to the left. AND FOX IS NUMBER #1 ! Same with conservative talk radio. Savage, Rush & Levin.....ALL NUMBER #1!

That has to tell the liberal media something, huh?

Fox Is Number !! (SORTA')

Just to be clear... Fox is #1 on CABLE... Not overall News Programing... although Fox News's loyal believers seldom make this distinction when they quote "Fox Is #1!"

Broadcast News always beats Fox News by a huge margin.

     Total Viewers       Adults 25-54

ABC      7,320,000      1.7/7;  2,080,000
NBC      7,910,000      1.9/8;  2,380,000
CBS      5,570,000      1.4/6;  1,700,000

Source: The Nielsen Company, NTI Total Viewers and Adults 25-54 Live + SD weeks of 5/10/10, 5/3/10 & 5/11/09

Fox News Chanel  – 1,243,000 viewers (Cable News Daily Ratings for May 19, 2010- The Nielsen Company)
Even 3rd place CBS has 4times more viewers than Fox News.

Rush Limbaugh, the guy who said oil leaking into the ocean was a normal and natural event!  I think he is just nervous Glen Beck may 'out crazy' him and so he needs to be more belligerent.

I do notice some news agencies lean to the left a little as well.  When you read an article in Fox or any other news site, including CNN and MSNBC, when you read further down you can see where each source made the counter point more minimal.
