SCHENECTADY 4 upper Union St. buildings to get facade work BY MICHAEL LAMENDOLA Gazette Reporter
Four upper Union Street business and property owners will spend approximately $622,000 in private and public money to upgrade their building facades and repair their structures this summer, local officials announced. The investment is part of efforts by merchants, city, county and economic development officials to improve the appearance of key commercial corridors in Schenectady County beyond the city’s downtown. The upper Union Street projects are: 1611-1613 Union St., also known as the Salamack building. Gillen said it is one of the largest buildings on upper Union Street. 1729 Union St., the former Passano Paints store acquired by Phillips Hardware. Phillips Hardware will open its seventh hardware store at this location, creating a new retail draw in the upper Union Street corridor, Gillen said. 1604 Union St., Head to Tail Pet Wellness Center. Facade and expansion work will help it grow and serve the needs of pet owners from around the Capital Region, Gillen said. 1599 Union St., the former Ricciardi’s Deli building. The work is part of a plan to bring a new tenant to the location, Gillen said. “Upper Union Street is a very important commercial corridor in the county. We have been working closely with [business and property owners] to have a renaissance in that commercial area,” said Ray Gillen, chairman of the Metroplex Development Authority and commissioner of economic development and planning for Schenectady County. “Upper Union Street is a growing, successful commercial corridor that employs more than 600 people and is a sales tax generator,” Gil- len said, stressing its importance to Schenectady County’s economy. Metroplex will provide $122,000 in grant funding for the four projects. Business and property owners will match the grants at least one to one. For this round of funding, Gillen said he expects the matching commitments to exceed $500,000................>>>>....................>>>>...............http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r00903&AppName=1
"Upper Union Street is growing"-lol. The florist closed, the armed forces fled, the Italian deli closed. More and more empty retail space. Like every other neighborhood business district. Salamack's has been for sale for years.
Maybe Union Street will look like lower State St {below Erie} after this "renaissance" project?
If I remember correctly, the union st. area got a grant of some sort last year too.
